But the Surface Pro is much more than a toy tablet like an iPad. The people who say things like "My iPad (or other tablet) does everything I need and has replaced my laptop" never needed a laptop in the first place. These people are content consumers who's main use of any computing device is to access social networking sites and view cat pictures. The Surface can function as a tablet, a laptop and even a desktop replacement. Most tablets can't make that claim.

It's very plain to see that you, as well as others who've never used or owned a Surface, don't understand how awesome of a device it is. That isn't me being ridiculous, it's you.

To be fair, an iPad can have a keyboard connected to it, and it can run fairly full fledged apps, like Office 365 now. It even has an adapter to plug it into a larger display. It's still relatively crippled in its storage capacity though, and memory capabilities. But, if your needs are relatively light (word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, browsing, or even running remote apps from a virtual machine..) you could use it as a desktop and take it with you.

But, the surface is definitely a full fledged desktop replacement capable for a lot of people if they wanted to.

Oh I absolutely agree. I was just talking about over all perception of the form factor... and in general terms.

Personally, were I ever to spend a couple grand on a device, it would not be a tablet, unless of course there existed a circumstance whereby absolutely no other device would suffice. I suspect that I'm not alone.

    Perception.

My Surface Pro has pretty much taken over most of my computing needs. I use it as a more-flexible-than-ipad tablet and as a desktop replacement connected to a big monitor, keyboard and great trackpad.

My desktop AIO is used when I want to futz with OS's and the big storage is a plus for that compared to the SP, and I run iTunes, Caibre` and PlayOn all the time to share books, music and video.

The SP is a great box but it certainly is at the high end of the Windows laptop world in price.

I am curious if you have some sort of 3G, 4G or LTE setup so you can take it where ever you go?

I see the lack of being able to use it where ever you go, as the number one failure of the Surface units. Do the Surface tablets even have some sort of mobile support base, like AT&T, Verison, etc.?

  6. I never looked at the Surface (non-pros), but I thought there was a model available with some sort of cell data setup.

On the Surface Pro it isn't available, but I have used my phone as a mobile hotspot with it a few times.

How are the speeds when doing this? and how do you do it?

I really want a tablet, but not even thinking the Surface as an option because of that. I am thinking the new, larger iPhone 6 may be my best bet, especially with Apple Pay coming out.

You see I consider the Surface more as a laptop than a tablet.

  9. The speeds are very good, just a tad slower than on the phone. All dependent on your cell provider's data type.

To do it, you just set it up on the phone. On a Windows phone you just turn on Internet Sharing, it will tell you what the password is (and you can change that), and then your computer can see that just as it does any other wifi. You can do that on the iPhones also, I just don't remember how.

I did this for the week or so when I was between home internet providers and it worked quite well.

If you're in an area with 4G cellular, the speeds can be excellent. I have gotten download speeds as high as 20Mbs using my phone. Heck, that's faster than my home internet connection which tops out at 4Mbs.

On my Android phone, it's a matter of turning on the phone's hotspot feature then connecting to it from the Surface just like you'd connect to any other wifi hotspot.

When you're in an area with only 3G cellular, the speeds can be disappointing. I am in that situation this weekend, camping in the RV in a 3G area and my download speed using the phone is only 600Kbs. *Sad

    Hi there

Why not use the weekend in your RV to FORGET about phones, Internet etc etc and enjoy Nature -- You'll be surprised at how much you'll enjoy it -- No phones - no computers for 2 or 3 days -- pure Bliss before getting back to "normality".

    Enjoy !!!!!

    Cheers

We all enjoy different things, bliss is a state of mind. There are also people who would ask "Why camp in an RV? Camping in a tent is our idea of fun." I did the tent thing for years but now I camp in my RV. I like having all the amenities available to me, along with a comfortable, warm bed to sleep in at night.

I typically work from home but there would be nothing stopping me from working from my RV while camped somewhere, provided I have a decent internet connection. I haven't done it yet but I've often thought about it.
