If you take good care no.
If exposed regularly to light - IR - UV... sunlight then yes.
I've seen them turn yellow and become unreadable little by little. Or for some DVD the inner /dye coating got tiny holes over time.
Overall the plastic will also tend to break more easily instead of bending if exposed to sunlight. But they are way better than CD's I give you that.
If you would use one USB drive for the exact same purpose as you use the DVD for, will the USB be less reliable than a DVD drive?

 

DVDs will never be as reliable as a thumb drive. I wouldn't be surprised if within a couple of years DVDs will be just like floppy disk. It's already hard to find decent blank DVDs in stores.

 

Lately I have been making DVDs of just about everything and storing the ESD and .iso files. I toss DVDs and delete the files when they have clearly become obsolete or expired. I have yet to use one to revert, though.

 

Then again you can't store flash for a long period without refreshing it or you will experience data corruption. Retention periods are on the order of a year or less I think.

 

If I reduce the free space on drive C to 10 GB, can Anniversary Update be prevented?

Matthew, why don't you want the Anniversary Update?

I plan to set a System Restore Point just ahead of it, but I do that often anyway.

 

Perhaps I want it delayed.

 

Let the AU install and then roll back. What you roll back from is not offered a second time by WU. A rejected build is recorded in the registry to prevent that. Maybe that won't work with the AU but I'm betting it will.

 

I don't trust Windows rollbacks. In my experience, you don't always get back exactly what you originally had. I do trust Macrium Reflect backups, though.
