Windows 10: Microsoft Edge Dev for Windows 10 gets dark mode improvements

Microsoft Edge Dev Build 77.0.197.1 is now available with improvements and fixes. The update brings dark theme to pages like Settings, History, Downloads and others.

The update also adds a new option that would show icon for individual favourites on the favourites bar. More Languages have now been added in Microsoft Edge along with the ability to choose which categories of diagnostic data are shared with the feedback.

Microsoft fixed an issue where navigating to a website by typing its address in address bar resulted in the browser to crash. Microsoft also fixed an issue where opening DevTools in an InPrivate window resulted in the browser to crash.

An issue where selecting an item from the dropdown menu resulted in the browser to crash has also been fixed. The Redmond Giant also fixed an issue where signing out of the browser sometimes crashes it. An issue has also been fixed were signing into the browser resulted in it in a broken state.

Other Fixes:

An issue where some favorites on the favorites bar spontaneously lost their text has now been fixed.

Microsoft fixed an issue on Mac where videos on certain websites don’t cause the video controls to appear on the touch bar.

An issue where searching from the address bar doesn’t work with certain search providers has now been fixed.

Fixed an issue where certain context menu items were incorrectly appearing in some DevTools context menus.

An issue where the + button to open new tabs sometimes wasn’t the correct color has now been fixed.

Microsoft has improved drag and drop responsiveness on the Favorites page.

Some layout issues on the Extensions page when using certain localized builds have now been fixed in the latest build.

As you can see there is a long list of fixes released in the latest build for Insiders in the Dev Channel. If you are enrolled then the latest build is up for grabs to test the new features.

Improvements for Enterprises in Microsoft Edge on the Windows 10 CU

Last month, we began rolling out the Windows 10 Creators Update (Windows 10 version 1703) to over 400 million customers around the world. The Creators Update upgrades Microsoft Edge to EdgeHTML 15, including a number of performance, security, and compatibility improvements.

In this post, we’ll share a bit more detail on how the Windows 10 Creators Update makes Microsoft Edge better than ever for Enterprise customers and IT Professionals.

Management Improvements

In Windows 10 version 1703, we’ve added new policies that support key management scenarios, enabled by Mobile Device Management (MDM), Microsoft Intune, and Group Policy. In particular, we’ve focused on missing policies that were requested in your feedback.

You can find the full list of new policies for Microsoft Edge in the Available Policies topic on TechNet. Some of the highlights include:

Compatibility

We’ve often discussed compatibility for legacy sites, and how Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer 11 can work better together to provide a modern experience, while still providing a compatible fallback for legacy experiences. Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer provide the ability to seamlessly switch from one to the other, based on the site you’re loading, making sure your users have the best experience possible. To reinforce this approach, we’ve added these policies for better app compatibility:

Keep favorites in sync between Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge

One of our most common requests is for a policy to Keep favorites in sync between Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge. New in the Windows 10 version 1703, this policy setting synchronizes user favorites between the two browsers in real-time. That means that any changes you make in the Internet Explorer Favorites folder structure is also made in the Microsoft Edge Favorites database, and vice versa. Combined with the Enterprise Mode Site List, your users should never need to remember which browser to use to open a site – it should all be done automatically.

Allow Adobe Flash

Some customers have shared concerns about how to manage Adobe Flash content. Windows 10 version 1703 adds the Allow Adobe Flash policy setting to completely turn off, or disable, Adobe Flash content from running in your organization.

Adobe Flash Click-to-Run

We’re encouraging the transition to HTML5 alternatives by providing additional user control over when Flash content loads. We’ve made Microsoft Edge default to only allow Adobe Flash content to run when someone explicitly clicks on it. With this policy, you can choose to override this experience and allow Adobe Flash content to simply run,.

Customizing the experience

We’ve also added a number of policy settings that help you customize user experiences and functionality as per your enterprise policy:

Prevent the First Run webpage from opening on Microsoft Edge

This setting disables the “First Run” experience in Microsoft Edge. Your users will instead navigate straight to their default start page.

Disable lockdown of Start pages

We’ve previously provided the ability to lock down your Start pages by using the policy setting, Configure Start pages. Since then, we’ve heard feedback from a number of customers who simply wanted a configuration option, with no lock down. In Windows 10 version 1703, we’ve added an additional policy setting that you can set on top of the existing one to configure Start pages without locking them down. You can then decide whether to modify, add, or delete these Start pages.

Search

We have introduced three new policies to help you configure search providers:

Configure additional search engines: Lets you add additional search engine providers for your employees to choose from.

Set default search engine: Lets you decide the default search engine for your employees.

Allow search engine customization: Lets you decide whether to lock down your search engine configuration so your employees can’t change it.

Allow Address bar drop-down list suggestions

This policy setting lets you decide whether the Address bar drop-down functionality is available in Microsoft Edge. If you disable this setting, your employees won’t get suggested search results when typing in the Microsoft Edge suggestions list.

Allow clearing browsing data on exit

If you don’t want an employee’s browsing data to persist on the machine at the end of a browsing session, you can use this policy setting to automatically clear all browsing data when Microsoft Edge closes.

Productivity

With the Windows 10 Creators Update, we’ve introduced a number of new features and ongoing improvements to browser fundamentals, to improve the overall experience of the browser for all of your users.

Tab management

Microsoft Edge now lets your users set tabs aside for later, sweeping them aside and organizing them neatly in a special section for easy access at a later time. We’ve also made it easier to glance at the content of all open tabs by simply clicking the “show tab previews” icon, which will expand the tab bar to show a preview of each open tab.

Fundamentals

Made for the modern web, with available support for the legacy web

Microsoft Edge stays up-to-date. with support for the latest web standards that are driving today’s websites and web apps, giving you a browser that “just works” with modern sites. The Edge Developer Center also provides guidance and tools to help developers update their sites to use modern standards.

We understand that migrating your sites to modern web standards can be a long-term process. Using Enterprise Mode with Internet Explorer for backward compatibility can help you upgrade more easily. We’re also making it easier for you to manage your Enterprise Mode site lists. If your site list is of a relatively small size, using the Enterprise Mode Site List Manager is the easiest way to manage your Enterprise Mode Site List. If your if your site list is relatively large and requires multiple users to work on it, we recommend using the Enterprise Mode Site List Portal.

More efficient, more responsive and more secure

In a recent blog post, we talked in detail about the work done to make Microsoft Edge more efficient, responsive, and secure in the Windows 10 Creators Update. Some of the highlights are:

We’ve improved battery efficiency, so when your users are mobile with their laptops or Surface devices, they will get more out of their battery, improving productivity on the go.

Microsoft Edge is now faster and more responsive, even when the page may be busy or hung, by prioritizing the user’s input.

We’ve introduced Arbitrary Code Guard and Code Integrity Guard to help protect users from exploits that aim to load malicious code into memory, and dramatically improved the Microsoft Edge sandbox, cutting the attack surface available by up to 90% in some areas.

Conclusion

The Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703) makes life easier for you as an Enterprise administrator or IT professional, introducing a number of new policies and improvements to reduce the overhead of supporting both Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer 11. It also improves the end-user experience considerably, with new features and improved fundamentals for a more productive and enjoyable experience on the web.

3 improvements to Windows Dev Center

We’ve been working hard on Windows Dev Center and wanted to share some of the improvements we’ve made for you, our developers.

You can now submit PWAs to the Microsoft Store

First, we’re excited to announce that you can submit your Progressive Web App (PWA) to the Microsoft Store through Windows Dev Center. PWAs are web apps, progressively enhanced with modern web technologies to provide a more app-like experience. Publishing a PWA to the Microsoft Store give you full access to everything Windows Dev Center has to offer including control over how your app appears in the Microsoft Store, the ability to view and respond to feedback (reviews and comments), insights into telemetry (installs, crashes, shares, etc.), and the ability to monetize your app.

Submitting a PWA to the Microsoft Store requires generating an app package upload file containing your PWA first, which can be done via the free PWA Builder tool. To learn more about PWAs and some of the steps required to publish to Microsoft Store, check out this blog.

Health report enhancements

We’ve added new charts to the Health report. You can use this additional info to help you make informed decisions on improvements you can make to your application to keep your customers happy.

Crash-free sessions and devices (Health report): Shows the percent of devices or user sessions that did not experience a crash.

This allows you to understand how the number of crashes you are seeing affect your users. For example, an app could have 10,000 crashes in one day. If 90% of your devices are affected, then you would probably classify that as critical and act to fix it right away. However, if that only represents 5% of devices using your app, the priority might be lower.

This chart has two tabs:

Crash free devices: the % of unique devices that did not experience a failure

Crash free sessions: the % of unique user sessions that did not experience a failure

Stack prevalence (Failure details page): Shows the top stacks that contributed to the failure, ordered by percentage.

The stack prevalence table displays the most common failure paths, ordered by percentage of all stacks. This lets you quickly see which are the most common call stacks/paths to a point of failure, so you can best apply your time to implement fixes with the greatest impact. In addition, the frame where the failure occurred is bolded in the call stack.

Also, we have made failure downloads [CABs] more discoverable on the failure details page by adding a filter so you can easily find all “Failures with downloads” – instead of having to search through the report.

Improvements to the Store listing page

We have made changes to the Store listing page, where you provide the text and images that your customers will see when viewing your app’s listing in the Microsoft Store. With these changes you will see additional text to the right of sections within the Store listing page that help provide clarity on what you should enter in each field. Some sections even have direct links to documentation.

Two major sections we’ve redesigned based on your feedback are the “Store logos” and “Additional art assets” sections. We now provide additional guidance to help you understand how each of these assets are used.

You’ll find additional info throughout the Store listing page to help you use fields effectively.

Microsoft is developing a built-in ad blocker for its Edge browser

"One of the first browser add-ons many people install to improve their online experience is Adblock Plus or something similar. Until recently, Microsoft Edge's lack of support for add-ons put off a lot of would-be users, but reports from Build 2016 suggest that native ad blocking is on its way to the Internet Explorer successor.

Adblock Plus is coming to Edge, but built-in ad blocking would negate the need for such an add-on. A slide shown off and snapped at a Build presentation shows that the next version of Edge, in response to user feedback, will feature ad blocking capabilities. There's no word on delivery timescale, but the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update would seem a likely candidate.

ZDNet's Ed Bott photographed the slide which shows Microsoft's development roadmap built around feedback from testers. Right at the top of the list is reference to plans to create a plugin and extension store for Edge, but it's entry number four that's more intriguing.

"Build ad blocking features into the browser" is listed as a Feature Request from users. But the good news is that it is not only listed as being "Deliverable 4682811", but as "Targeted for the next version".

This will no doubt come as good news for those who have fallen in love with Edge, but it's not something that will be welcomed by the likes of Adblock Plus. It does seem that, particularly in the mobile arena, there is a move to baking ad blocking into the browser so it makes sense that Microsoft is following the trend. But it is the fact that Edge straddles Windows 10 on the desktop and Windows 10 Mobile that makes this a particularly interesting move.

Keep an eye out for Insider builds in the coming weeks as the feature may be just around the corner."
