    Microsoft Edge Hacked

Using Firefox, I must have surfed about 20 websites including this one with all their complicated mumbo jumbo "solutions", none of which worked. Then it hit me- Why don't I simply restore windows to a previous date before this problem happened? This I did, and Voila! Edge is back to normal. If my Mywot add-on was working on Edge like it is on my Firefox, the problem would have never happened in the first place. It would have warned me before going to the rogue site. The rogue site was vokaroo dot com. I had meant to punch in vocaroo dot com.

  2. What will actually work in keeping you completely away from bogey sites to begin with is having web filtering processes watching over things! An Internet security suit often being the better version of an av software like VIPRE Internet Security 2015 or Norton Internet Security wlll check for malicious as well as any suspicious type of coding and usually block a site entirely! To get on some sites here found to be safe but with options for toolbar and making it your home page blah blah Bull shoy you have to shut the system protection down entirely when there isn't a separate option for the 3rd party firewall.

Oh it helps when first finding out about these types of options! When the Bing search engine was first new I ran into a beaut of a bug laden site! Had some fun cleaning off the 7 RC build at the time. Later on I was to hear about VIPRE and gave that program's 30 day trial a go and at this went with the life time license actually good until July 8 2026 so 10 is covered! *Biggrin

I just had the same thing happen to me and was glad I found this discussion. Can you tell me how you think it happened to you? I was simply listening to MP3's (may have gone to a couple sites to get information about a song), but really can't determine how someone was able to change the home page in MS Edge. Any thoughts?

UPDATE: Just saw the other responses and have a better understanding of the issue. Couldn't figure out how to delete my posts.

  7. Another way...

Navigate to the following directory: C:Users<users>AppDataLocalPackagesMicrosoft.MicrosoftEdge_xxxxxxACMicrosoftEdgeUserDefaultRecoveryAc tive .The XXXX after Microsoft Edge is different for every user, a succession of numbers and/or symbols. Delete the last folder. STEP 4: Hold the Windows Key and R againbutthis time copy + paste the following and click OK: notepad %windir%/system32/Drivers/etc/hosts A .txt file will open – don’t touch anything there. If you are hacked and someone has access to your PC, there will be a bunch of other IPs connected to you at the bottom. This is what a hosts file looks like: If there are a bunch of strange IPs connecting to you below “Localhost” you may be hacked, and it’s best to ask us in the comments for directions.

I disabled the adapter and the stupid thing was still there, except there was no verbal warning, just some dialogue box that I ran task mgr and killed. But I am running msert now, and will install mbam after it finishes and run it. Edge is a real joke. No security!

Went back and looked at the message that had a "Do not allow this page to generate any more messages" check box. I checked it, and THEN I was able to close the tab. Sorry about the mix up. I didn't read the message. I just went task manager and closed that crap. I'm just trying to get over an infection from .locky, and can't stand another one.

    Microsoft Edge Hacked

This type of malware is still active and I got it again last night. Because there are multiple popups it is almost impossible to close the windows before another pops up, although I did manage after several attempts. While you can launch task manager and delete MS Edge, it may leave a blank window impossible to remove. I run MS Sysinternals Process Explorer in place of Task manager as it is more powerful and I simple find the MS Edge listing and kill the process tree. However, if you relaunch Edge, it comes back because it is stuck in the cache and regenerating. Even logging off and on did not help. However, shutting down and rebooting solved it. and Edge launched OK again without problems.

For the uninitiated it looks like dire consequences will happen if you don't call MS and a number is giver (mine was 267-627-6391) which is phony and a scam to alleviate the untutored of their money. and during this a loud klaxon erupts from your speaker worse than my own emergency sounds. To be ultra safe I ran CCleaner to clean my caches and check registry. Then I ran a deeper scan with FIX-IT to further check files and registry and rebooted again.

If you are unfamiliar with Sysinternals I suggest you Google it as it is an excellent collection of tools for the advanced used. For the less advanced, just Process Explorer along is worth it to run in the background so you can go to it if you have program issues or crashed programs and just kill the process tree.

  14. SERIOUSLY? This thing is nothing but an annoyance. If you have any kind of active protection and get rid of it properly then you don't get any trojans or anything else that needs to be cleaned on your system. It is annoying because you have to use your task manager and go to Background processes. You will see multiple processes for Edge. If you keep closing them fast enough then it will kill the processes without letting them restart. Your Edge browser gets closed when you kill the last one and your problem is solved. There is no home page hack, there is nothing nefarious put on your machine and there is no need to do anything else other than stop it. You are ending the processes that it uses to do anything before it can do anything. It really is that simple. Sometimes I have to close each process three times but I get it fast enough and shuts down the page hack and lets you restart your browser as if it had never been there.

Yeah I get this crap on my PC's and since I use comodo sand box(Now called Containment)I use task manager to shut it down then run my Advanced Unistaller Pro to clean out Firefox browser and I'm good to go again.

It is really good to know this is not a threat of any kind to my PC but just an annoyance that we have to put up with.

I get this from going to websites that I use to watch my online movies and TV shows on and then every once in awhile it will show its ugly head and then I chop it off!
