Windows 10: Microsoft Edge vs. Google Chrome: Which web browser is faster?

Can anyone explain what exactly is meant by a browser being "fast" or "slow"? Is there anything more to this thread than an exchange of subjective impressions? How do you know which browser is faster? Are you trying to open same websites in different browsers (on the same machine) with a stopwatch? Or is there some app that measures the number of milliseconds it takes to access a website?

 

My take on this is that all of the modern browsers are fast. The perception of "Speed" is how fast a site is rendered and that's all based on the speed of servers not the browser.

 

I have my friend here with windows 7 and Chrome
I am here with windows 10 and Edge
We both press the same time for You Tube
I was ready into You Tube
His Chrome was still trying to get in
That is how I tested it
This forum as soon as I press the link I am in
That is how quick Edge is
Also Bing is getting faster than google also
So Microsoft must be working to make windows 10 and apps respond very fast

 

You have to consider server response time when performing this test. No mater how close you press the button together doesn't mean the request hit the server at the same moment.

 

Not to mention, it can all be the DNS server you use, the ISP you use and how it routes both incoming and outgoing and also the browsers cache. I can load the entire forum in 0.1ms flat in chrome or in edge on a 6Mbps ADSL connection but with good quality routing that is directly connected to the peering points and tier one backbones.

 

Then you understand that invalidates your test?

 

I ran a test one time, and it didn't prove a thing. . .*cry. . .so I haven't run another for a long time. . .*Smile

 

Here's a example of loading Windows 10 Forums currently using the built in browser developer tools:

Chrome v47.0.2526.69 beta-m (64-bit):




Edge 20.10240.16384.0:




So Chrome actually loaded 75 things vs 6 things in Edge when Windows 10 Forums is put in but Chrome is 0.81s faster. This is all because tenforums.com is fast... Now trying to go through the General forum is slower because it has lots of topics.

 

The same test going to LG G4 - Android Forums at AndroidCentral.com is slower because I think it has to do with how many things are on the site like ads and such and if it requires Adobe Flash or not...

As far as youtube.com is concerned, unless the chrome still uses flash and not html5.... I'm literally next door to Youtube and keep in mind that both Youtube and Chrome are both part of Google, now known as Alphabet Inc.

You would be surprised that tenforums.com is in Dallas, Texas which is actually further away than AndroidCentral.com which is actually in California. When you connect to Microsoft.com or Apple.com for example, you are not connecting to Microsoft's or Apple's servers, instead, you are connected to Akamai Technologies CDN (Content Delivery Network) which are basically servers hosted worldwide and you are always connected to the closest thing of the DNS you use, not your physical location so it can be slow if you are using a DNS that is not close to your ISP so technically Microsoft or Apple only needs to send everything once to the CDN and it will be mirrored on all the servers so the ISPs or wherever the Akamai servers are will only use traffic to send to you, not from Microsoft or Apple each time you ask for a download unless the content has changed, this is how Netflix works too as they use CDN's for distribution, otherwise the internet backbones would be overloaded.

AH.. not quite. Adding extensions is not going to make it that much better and it might open it up to more issues.
