Windows 10: Microsoft Family bypass URL restriction by clicking link in Teams

I am blocking YouTube.com through MS Family on my son's Windows 10 laptop, which he is using for remote learning. His class uses MS Teams and he accesses it through MS Edge browser. I have disabled all other browsers since Edge is the only browser that supports site blocking.


However, when a classmate posted a link to a YouTube video on MS Teams, he is able to click on it and then from there access any YouTube video. It blocks it if he clicks on the link with the URL, but if he clicks on the thumbnail of the video then he can get to YouTube.

Bypassing Family Restrictions

A family member was found watching adult content. I recently thought up of all possibilities this could happen as this member had family restrictions enabled and was tight on want showed up on that screen.

I believe this should come to Microsoft's attention as when many parents buy a laptop for their child, hoping they will use it for their research and aiding in the progress of their education, when in fact the family restrictions can be inefective if the
individual knows how and is determined to.

When a parents sets up the laptop with the childs account on, which does have restrictions but that child account has administrator privileges, meaning that the administrator can create a local account. As family restrictions only work with that specific
username/email with Microsoft's account, that user is now able to access adult content and anything not wise or otherwise fit for their age range (i.e. Pornography or other, maybe serious, sites). It could have a serious damaging effect on the child and their
future.

This fault must be raised and corrected as NO Child Account should be able to obtain administrator privileges such as that and some parents, not as computer literate, will be aware of this "hack".

 

Microsoft family restrictions

Hi,

You actually need your parent to turn off any restrictions on your account. I'm afraid you need to get yourself back to your family temporarily. These are the instructions for an adult account.

• Go to account.microsoft.com/family and sign in with your Microsoft account.
• To remove a child, find their name, then select Content restrictions. Turn off any settings you may have enabled. Then go back to your family’s page, find the child’s name again, and select More options > Remove
  from family.
• If you want to remove a child because they’re now an adult, or if an adult account has been misclassified as a child account, they’ll need to verify
  their account.

I personally think you should be good without doing the third step, but I can't give you a guarantee.
