Windows 10: Microsoft Family

I'm trying to set up a fully updated Windows 10 laptop for my family to use. I've added in the other family members online from my Microsoft account. However, the first time i tried logging in with any of the accounts, I noticed that the user account folder on the laptop was shortened to five letters in accordance with Microsoft naming policy. So to avoid this, i created local user accounts on the laptop not connected to any Microsoft account and then for each one, after logging in locally, converted that account to an online account that logs in with Microsoft account.



Everything seems to work ok - all the apps etc are logged in with their Microsoft accounts, as are the user accounts themselves, but when i log with my user account, it won't let me add the other user accounts into the "Microsoft Family" in Windows 10 user account settings. The accounts are all listed as "other users". However, in the Microsoft Family section their accounts are listed and shows that they can sign in, but it's not actually adding the existing accounts into the family group.


So here are my questions:


1 Is there any difference between a local user account that has been subsequently changed into a Microsoft account, and an account that was created from the outset as a Microsoft account?


2 Since the Microsoft Family settings are configured online via my Microsoft account, if i set up usage restrictions for my children eg usage time limits, app blocking, etc will they be effective when my child logs in with their ex-offline-now-Microsoft-account that is showing as "other user" account on my PC?


3 Can i change the name that appears on the login screen in Windows 10 so that it just shows the first name, eg "Fred" instead of their entire name, eg "Fred Flintstone"? I don't want to change their display name in their Microsoft accounts because that gets used in other areas where it's better to have their full name.


4 How do I rename a local user folder so that instead of it being called for example "Steph" is is called "Stephen" - the shortened form causes issues as it makes him sound like a girl

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community forum.

This could happen when the child account fails to sync with the server. I suggest you to try the steps listed below and check if it works:

• Open
  File Explorer and navigate to the following location:
• C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Parental Controls
  
  
  Note:
  The above mentioned directory is hidden, copy and paste the same location on the search bar in the File Explorer to access it.
  
• Delete the contents in the
  \\settings directory of the Parental Controls folder.
  
• Reboot the machine to see if the issue persists.
  

If the issue persists, you may want to remove the child account from Microsoft family and add it again.

Hi,

It could be because of the settings on the Family and Safety feature or the account you're using is added to a Family. With that being said, we suggest that you check if the account that you are using is a part of the
Family list. To check on it, go to Cortana
and search for Family Options.



To remove your account to the Family, you may follow the steps below:

• Use the Adult account to log in using this link.
• Click on the Family tab.
• On the account that you want to remove, click More > Remove from family.
• Then click Remove to confirm.
