Microsoft is adding a nifty feature to Edge, Chromium on Windows 10

Microsoft has recently started working on a new feature for the open-source Chromium project that would benefit various browsers, including new Edge and Google Chrome. As per a new commit, Microsoft wants to add a new feature to Chromium that would allow users to view password hidden under the asterisks.

In an upcoming version of Chromium-based Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, the reveal password option will allow you to see the text that you type in the password field. It’s also worth noting that reveal password option will come with hotkey support on Windows 10 and users will be able to view the password with a keyboard shortcut.

As per another commit, Microsoft is considering Alt-F8 keyboard shortcut to reveal the hidden password.

Microsoft says the reveal button would only appear with direct user input. The reveal button may disappear if the password field is not empty in the first place or if the browser loses the focus and regains it later.

“In conjunction with the radio and checkbox CLs, we’re wanting to gather feedback on the best approach to extend the implementation of controls to enable upstreaming of content that is valuable to any Chromium distro as well as the potential need for extending them for OS/Distro specific needs. One such example of this that we have provided for feedback is the Password Reveal. We will begin the standardization approach of a ::reveal() pseudo as well, but would like to gather feedback on this approach to influence how we build out the various other controls,” Microsoft Edge engineer noted in a commit.

It’s also important to note that the reveal button would show up only for passwords that you enter into the field. It will not show up for autofill passwords.

Microsoft is developing a built-in ad blocker for its Edge browser

"One of the first browser add-ons many people install to improve their online experience is Adblock Plus or something similar. Until recently, Microsoft Edge's lack of support for add-ons put off a lot of would-be users, but reports from Build 2016 suggest that native ad blocking is on its way to the Internet Explorer successor.

Adblock Plus is coming to Edge, but built-in ad blocking would negate the need for such an add-on. A slide shown off and snapped at a Build presentation shows that the next version of Edge, in response to user feedback, will feature ad blocking capabilities. There's no word on delivery timescale, but the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update would seem a likely candidate.

ZDNet's Ed Bott photographed the slide which shows Microsoft's development roadmap built around feedback from testers. Right at the top of the list is reference to plans to create a plugin and extension store for Edge, but it's entry number four that's more intriguing.

"Build ad blocking features into the browser" is listed as a Feature Request from users. But the good news is that it is not only listed as being "Deliverable 4682811", but as "Targeted for the next version".

This will no doubt come as good news for those who have fallen in love with Edge, but it's not something that will be welcomed by the likes of Adblock Plus. It does seem that, particularly in the mobile arena, there is a move to baking ad blocking into the browser so it makes sense that Microsoft is following the trend. But it is the fact that Edge straddles Windows 10 on the desktop and Windows 10 Mobile that makes this a particularly interesting move.

Keep an eye out for Insider builds in the coming weeks as the feature may be just around the corner.

Forget extensions, built-in ad blocking is coming to Microsoft Edge - [UPDATE... no it's not!]

  3. Edge Chromium, the Reading List

on the Edge feedback forum at

I have posed the following question in response to an existing thread

I wanted to ask this more pointed question:-

Will the mooted "offline" Reading List feature that was included in Edge HTML but never fully activated be added to Edge Chromium?

(I did get one reply to a question I posed, I think back in 2015,on the promised offline capability that reply said simply and unequivocably

""At this time, the reading list is not available offline in Microsoft Edge, but we’re working on it for a future update"

In my opinion it is a pretty useless add on anyway. because in EdgeHTML it does nothing that adding a URL to the Favorites list already does and now tht Edge Chromium sensibly includes an Internet Exploder like facility to Save a webpage complete you can
save the whole webpage for off line viewing i.e.reading anyway
