Windows 10: Microsoft locks Ryzen and Kaby Lake users out of updates on Windows 7

When necessary I will criticize anyone, including MS. But in this case, your off base. Why would you want to use an outdated OS on a new high powered processor? In the case of Win7 they dropped official support in 2015 and only did a extension for hardware that was out up to and including 2015,.

Win8.1 is going away in a year and I don't see why that would be used either. Given the lack of love for that OS I find it hard to fathom that anyone would want that on a current PC.

Newegg is till selling Windows 7. Microsoft is still profiting from it. Newegg should post a warning to shoppers.

Only three years till Windows 10 mainstream support ends too. Maybe it will never reach where Microsoft wanted it to be.

 

Only reason MS are doing this is to try & up the dismal Win 10 adoption rate which is only about 25%, they know that a lot of folk will stay with Win 7/8.1 as proven by how many stayed with XP for so long. The only way they can sneakily get folk to upgrade is to tell them that their shiny new CPU wont be supported by anything less than Win 10.

Remember all the underhand tactics they used to get folk to upgrade to 10, this is them using the same tactics.

 

The free upgrade is still working. You could upgrade it to 10 to get it registered even if you plan to keep using 7.

Maybe the free upgrade will stop one day, who knows....

 

Nope, that one will be staying on W7 same as the laptop will be staying on XP, even Linux doesn't work too good on it. They are just machines made for their respective OSs.

slowish uptake of W10 is nothing to do with the OS or even the price (as people have said there's still ways of getting (legally) free almost zero cost updates --Amazon for example is still selling relatively cheap copies of W7 and the update to W10 is still working) but due to the fact that people access content on so many different portable devices -- unless actually at a Desk and working it's so much easier using things like smart phones -- previously when travelling people would have taken out and used a laptop computer -- now they use phones -- and in any large city especially if using the Metro system where they exist it would be virtually impossible to use a laptop anyway - especially during Rush Hours which in places like London these days seems to start around 05.30 in the morning and last until about 02.00 the following morning !!!

W7 though can still be used perfectly well in a VM if you insist on running it on the latest hardware. VM's on modern fast hardware have very small overheads so a perfectly viable solution.

It would be interesting to know if that works.

I have a feeling it wouldn't as the CPU details are passed from the hypervisor to the guest so you'd still be stuck without updates. Perhaps you can fudge the CPUid somehow.

I don't have the hardware to test though alas.

Free is an opportunity cost - a benefit one could have received, but gave up, to take another course of action. In this case, free came with broadcasting telemetry (aka enhanced Data Mining) and a live OS built for ad targeting and what not. To name a few. Now one can debate the good and bad of this, but this is what "free" gave you.

Regardless, there's no reason for MS to NOT support Kaby and Ryzen in "some" capacity. To not be able to receive ANY updates makes absolutely no sense other than a clear attempt to force more people into upgrading to Windows 10. Period.

And for the record, I am running Windows 10 (x 64 Pro). Been running it since pre-release. And I dumped 7 when 8 was released to public. STILL, MS is wrong here. They promised to support to EOL. Do it.

There's the other side to this coin, processor manufacturers should also make sure their products are compatible with most widely used OS.

So per you're statement, these items should be supported. Period. And honestly what manufacture wouldn't do that!!!. They're trying to make sales too.

The compatibility IS there! MS just refuses to honor it. Case in point - it's not like these CPU's don't run under Win 7/8/8.1 now. It's just that MS is suddenly telling end users the OS will no longer receiver updates of any kind "after" you install these processors. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if MS stealthily slipped in an OS update breaking these CPU's from the start.
