More specifically, Windows 10 build 14271, which is the latest version of the Redstone preview that we have to.
It moves further towards the ultimate retirement of the Control Panel.

    The desktop one, that is.

Classic as it is, the Settings app is where the action is at in Windows 10 — as more and more options are being moved to this universal application. Redstone has just taken it one step further, and if this trend holds, we could see a range of new options part of Settings by the time this update for the OS arrives.

As noted, the latest version that Microsoft released moves the taskbar configuration options from the desktop Control Panel to Settings.

Take another big step towards this change.

  2. That doesn't come as any surprise here since the mention of seeing the original CP phased out completely was in reports months ago! The move is mostly to integrate all the familiar settings into touchscreen capable format for both mobile and desktop platforms.

The Task Manager was the first to follow the introduction of Aero with Vista when 8 arrived. The new Performance, Resource, Startup options were integrated into the new form of TM at the time. It would stand to reason other types of integration would come as well as the OS progresses rather then stagnates with the Legacy to XP look and feel.

    :)

    Desktop Icons

I think you mean the Desktop Taskbar. Right click on the taskbar, select Properties, Taskbar tab and the option to move it will appear as well as other settings.

The new Settings "app" as it is currently is a poor substitute for the legacy Control Panel, if you are looking for everything you need in one place.

9 categories vs 45 categories. Not even close.
You've got to search in a box within a box to find anything. Or ask Cortana (Hahahahaha).

But then again, things are moving towards less and less user control every day, aren't they?

  6. The CP isn't going away just yet like in a secret overnight move. The taskbar is generally set up bringing up the Start menu/taskbar properties screen. MS simply adding what you see there as far as the Taskbar only to the new Settings screen. When going to use a touchscreen tablet for example you won't have the right click option as you would even on netbook as well as laptops and desktops.

One more reason to stay away from 10.

Not actually! If you are that concerned about seeing change coming about you would still be running one of the Legacy versions on some old clunker you kept running! Even 3.1 and 95 are now being run in web browsers! W8 was the one to stay away from most recently being a mess there! You notice it got replaced in a heart with 8.1 and now 10 brings back a bit of what was tossed after 7!

W11? or whatever is to come after 10 might have you more worried in that regard.

I don't see the logic of it. Putting all controls in one place is apparently the goal, but I think putting each set of controls in the best place for that particular function works better. Getting to taskbar settings via a right click on the taskbar itself isn't only more convenient, but makes more sense, IMO.

    Soooooo...????
    What's the big deal?
You can still access Taskbar options with a right click.
Having them in Control Panel(or the Settings App for that matter), is just a redundancy.

Apparently you missed Post #4 where I was putting it in simple terms as far as how MS is making changes as far as the now outdated Classic Windows look to the modern touchscreen capabled gui with the two platform OS seen in 10. You also have to remember that a lot of ideas you see implemented in 10 were originated in RT for Surface tablets. 10 is the go between from tablet to desktop to tablet to laptop, etc.

Actually adding more settings into Start>Settings makes far more sense that the continual need to right click on the Start menu to find the CP option there! Generally speaking the Settings area is lacking to begin with with that constant need to bringing up a second option not found there but in the Control Panel to finish up a change you are trying in the Settings to begin with! The right click option has always been a quick and easier for the desktop user but not for devices lacking the right click ability.

Tap this tap that tap this over here tap that over there run around on touchscreen trying to get into the CP to tap dance your way around is how MS is seeing that. "We're no longer in the 90s we have to move on!" is suddenly heard in the background at an MS board room meeting. *really

  14. Agree with you 100% it will be nice not to have to right click about time we all came up to 2016 and onwards

  15. Well in general terms people at first resented the Aero style themes in Vista but widely accepted the exact same with 7! While "Metro in you face" went over like a lead balloon when 8 first arrived MS came up with a new gui incorporated into the new Start menu rather then continuing on with the need to see a full screen menu appear every time! Of course you are seeing a few 3rd party options in that dept. for 10 as well as for 8, 8.1 available.

Essentially it is called progress while Metro wasn't! You have to work things out between two separate hardware platforms entirely tweaking things left and right until you find that common ground. Reducing clutter as well as making things easier for the typical user takes time. Of course if we look back at 8 that was a sudden surprise for you slam dunk there catching everyone off guard! With 10 however MS had to get the act together and start seeing things made to work.
