Microsoft Moves Taskbar Options To Settings In Redstone

    Hi there
While your answer is "Technically correct" it's a really long winded way and having to scroll through an entire alphabetical list containing a mixture of your installed applications and various system functions all mixed together is really imho a totally half baked way of doing it.

Items of similar functionality should be grouped together -- imagine for example in a large plane if the air speed indicator was at the rear of the cockpit while the "artificial horizon" was at the front so the pilot couldn't see both instruments at the same time.

There was nothing wrong with the control panel --if they wanted to get rid of it then in the settings they should add a category for some of these lesser known options.

Also a lot of people don't want those stupid tiles on a COMPUTER - it's not a mobile phone -- that was the total B/S with W8. I have almost ZERO tiles on my machine and that's how it's going to stay.

    Cheers

    Hi there

I think you didn't read my original reply -- Search is fine if you already know the name -- what if you don't have a clue what the option is called or even part of it -- at least on control panel you can go through all the various options.

If you already know what the name is then the settings thing is just fine.

I know you know your stuff and are usually very helpful - but please actually see what the posters problem is before answering with a solution - which of course technically correct doesn't address the problem being raised.

    Cheers

jimbo have you tried using search, without using a correct name, and just using short descriptions? It works fine. Unless you can give me an example...

    Hi there
you need to type in at least one letter to get the search menu to appear and then you can do a bit of searching - I refuse to even consider that Cortana abomination !!!!!

Still a cack handed way of doing it when you can just bring up Control panel and very easily see all the relevant options either by category with limited descriptions or by small / large icons.

Intelligent search (i.e when you know a part of the string) is always a great tool but not so good when you haven't really got a a clue what you need in the first place - whereas a list of the available options in a particular category - i.e control panel is IMO a much more user friendly and useful way of doing it.

W8 suffered hideously by not having a cascadable menu - which meant endless scrolling like a mobile phone. I think people realize on a PC how valuable cascadable items are -- and the control panel brings all those items of admin type function into one place.

So I still think it's a mistake by MS to get rid of it without having suitable alternatives.

Anybody who has done any teaching at any level will tell you that RECOGNITION is always easier than RECALL - so looking at the available options is a far superior way if you are unsure than relying on memory and then typing in various things into a search engine.

    Cheers

Ok I think I understand what you mean now.
Say I don't really know what setting or option I need, a good visual(icons and text a bit spread out in groups) is easier to possibly find what it is you need. The settings app is a bit scrunched together, and the links descriptions are sometimes not well placed/named until one mouses over, so a setting or option might get overlooked.

@Lee you can pin individual settings from the app to Start. For example I have Update pinned as I go there often, and don't want to click around.

  10. Related, but slightly off topic

Is there any way to pin the Check for Updates part of the Store to the start menu, I don't use the store much, mainly just to see if any apps have an update *Smile

  15. Fantastic! There you go! Made simple and rather good find except you are not able to download it even by saving it as an image file with a right click unfortunately. You would need a direct link for that.

So don't you know after that Linux Mint breach at the main site everyone will now become Windows expert from simply paying more attention now to Windows then before! *What*Roflmao2 Now many will be scared enough to stay with MS for fear of getting bugged with open source downloads!

Now don't forget the control.exe shortcut there since you can right click to pin a good number of CP items if not simply create a new desktop shortcut for just about everything found there to the Start menu or Quick Access! Some items like Desktop Gadgets only see the shortcut option only.
