Windows 10: Microsoft Next Gen HoloLens Targeted for late Q2 2019

It’s no secret that Microsoft is working on a next-gen HoloLens as the company released the first iteration several years ago. The big question is when the next iteration will arrive as the company has been building the product in broad daylight.

In early 2018, the target was to show off the device this year but following development hurdles, the company has pushed back the announcement of the hardware. Microsoft is now targeting a late Q2, 2019 release, according to people familiar with the company’s plans; this assumes that the remaining development challenges are overcome and manufacturing ramps up as expected.

The next generation device will be smaller, have a wider field of view, and longer battery life. None of this should be a surprise as it’s typical for a new device to follow this development model but unlike laptops, bending light to increase the FoV isn’t nearly as easy as increasing battery capacity. The company is also making a big bet on ‘localized-AI’ which has increased the difficulty of building the device...

...The next generation HoloLens is currently known as Sydney internally and the company is targeting a lower price point than the current $3000 mark for the developer edition.

Next-Gen HoloLens is Codenamed Sydney; Arrives Q1, 2019

It was a little over a year ago, that I broke the news that Microsoft had stopped the development of HoloLens V2 and was pushing forward to V3. Since then, I have been asked about a million times for more information about the upcoming device but if you know where to look, the company is developing the hardware in broad daylight.

Based on documents I was able to view, Microsoft is still targeting a Q1 release of the next gen headset. Additionally, the company is referring to the project internally as Sydney.

The device, according to the documents, will be lighter, more comfortable to wear, and have significantly improved holographic displays. But most importantly, it will cost significantly less than the current version of the HoloLens.

All of this is the natural evolution for the second generation of a piece of hardware but the good news is that it’s still on track for a release early next year...

Microsoft OneDrive to get differential sync in Q2 2017

Microsoft's latest OneDrive roadmap shows Q2 2017 as the ship target for a long-awaited feature: Differential sync.

Microsoft roadmaps are fluid things -- sometimes so fluid that a subtle change may go unnoticed by many (especially me).

A prime example of this: The OneDrive roadmap.

I hadn't noticed until a reader (thanks @BrokenCanoe) asked me yesterday when and if Microsoft planned to provide differential sync in OneDrive.

Last February, Microsoft listed differential sync -- the ability to sync only the parts of files that had changed, not entire files -- as a firm commitment, but with no specific public release target.

Differential sync is a much-requested OneDrive feature, as it will save time and bandwidth. And it's a feature that OneDrive rival Dropbox, for one, already has...
