The Windows installation ISOs usually fit on a DVD - they are less than 4GB.

Windows 7 including SP1 still fits on a DVD so I can't see W10 never fitting on one. There are larger capacity USB sticks available as well. I think if MS are going to go the route of continuous updates then Windows won't just grow and grow, some things will inevitably be removed as they are superseded.

IMHO, installing from a USB thumb drive is the way to go. Faster than doing the install from optical media. Also easy to redo if a new image comes out. No size restrictions too.

There's the format option of the ISO, also. ESD format is about 22% smaller than the standard WIM format. That's about 800MB based on current ISO sizes. There's room for growth on a 4.7GB DVD. Then there's the 9.4GB double-sided. Kinda rare, can't see that happening.

Who knows, maybe some day we'll all just "Boot from the Cloud"! Run the whole OS from somewhere-out-there......... spooky! *Wink

Oh, I agree! But a lot of older boxes, like mine, (only 3 yrs old), wouldn't know how to boot from a thumb if you kicked the BIOS in the butt! It'll do USB, but only ext HDD.

I hope not. While I'm not against MS going down the subscription route (as long as the pricing structure is sensible of course) I want my OS running on my hardware, I spend time and money on my rig to get the most out of it, not to have someone else's server slow me down!

Yep I get no less than 5 emails a week to verify my limited PayPal account or to verify my Mastercard on my PayPal account (I do not have a Mastercard) now they will not need to use email for that.

The forced updates would turn me off. You would be forced to auto update anytime Microsoft wants you to and you couldn't hide updates. I could see that being an issue with some hardware drivers. Like some, you wouldn't be able to wait tell Saturday to install the updates unless you some how block Microsoft updates.

The trouble is there are other "free" products and services that people can use.

I have Office 2007 & 2010 available to install, so I don't need to buy/rent the new versions.
I don't use any of the other items you've listed, so MS would have to somehow force me to use them to get any cash.

  14. I'm in the same boat as you, free software options do the job just as well for most people. The only way I would pay for software would be if I was a graphic designer and needed adobe products. Even so gimp is still very usable.

I really don't see people buying ms software unless they really need an advance office suite. At that point it's most likely a business write off.

On this whole cloud os, Internet speeds around the world would really have to improve before anyone would jump on board. Then you have the Sony debacle and I just don't see how they can keep our data secure.

Yes I love Spotify and Netflix and have used the cloud for some file storage, but that doesn't mean I want a cloud os.

Surely I can't be the only one who buys software, I've always bought new Versions of Windows as soon as they've come out, mostly upgrade versions for around $100. I've paid for Office 365 and paid for older versions, I've used plenty of free software and still use it, but if the software is good I tend to pay for it, which is why I've never had any problems paying for Windows.

I believe that people should be paid for their work, we can't expect everything for nothing, although it would be nice.
