Windows 10: Microsoft Photos not indexing all photos

I store my photos on a NAS that I access using SMB as a mapped network drive. I have no trouble accessing the photos and looking at them by double clicking on the images using file explorer and opening them in Microsoft Photos.

However, when I add all my photos to my collection in Microsoft Photos, only a fraction of the images are visible in the "Collection" and "Folders" tab. I have tried adding one folder at a time and it seem to index more photos than adding a parent folder containing sub folders with the individual images.

I have made sure that there is no difference in the file permission between the files that are indexed and the ones that aren't.

I have tried the following:

• Removing all photos from Microsoft Photos and adding them again. The same exact files are indexed and there are still missing photos.
• Repairing and reseting the app. No success.

I have seen others with similar issues but I have not found any solution. Does anyone have any suggestions other than to not use Microsoft Photos?

The Photos app brings together pictures from all your devices using OneDrive, so that you can browse them by date, album or folder. It also automatically enhances photos, and creates albums for you, to showcase your best shots.

I suggest you to follow the methods below and check if it helps:

Method 1:

I suggest you to change the Default apps in the setting app and verify the result. You may follow the steps in the below:

• Go to settings and system.
  
• Click on Default Apps and select the appropriately.
  

Method 2:

I suggest you to reinstall Photo app using the PowerShell command
and reinstall using the Windows store. Follow the below steps.

• Open the　Start　menu, type　Windows PowerShell　in the search bar.
  
• Right click on the　Windows　PowerShell　and select　Run as　administrator.
  
• Enter the below command to uninstall the Photo app.
  

• 　　get-appxpackage　　*Microsoft.Windows.Photos* | remove-appxpackage

Multiple Photos

We suggest that you follow the steps below to delete the photo through Photos app:

• If you’re looking at your list of photos in Photos app, select the photos by clicking on checkbox on the photos you want to delete. Click
  Delete icon at the bottom right corner to delete.
• If you open a photo, Tap or press Delete
  key from keyboard.
