Microsoft plans to make Chromium’s text finder feature more useful

All Chromium-based web browsers have a powerful feature that allows you to find a specific phrase or words on a webpage. This feature is useful if you have to find a specific text on a lengthy web and while it works as intended, there’s always room for improvement.

It appears that an improved version of find box may land soon when a commit from Microsoft is merged into Chromium.

At the moment, when you select a text on a webpage and launch Chromium’s find feature (Ctrl + F), the selected text doesn’t show up in the find textbox as the find box maintains its own history.

Spotted by us, Microsoft recently applied for a new Chromium change that aims to prepopulate find with selection.

In a commit post, Microsoft explains that the find box maintains its own history and it doesn’t launch with the term that a user has selected when opening the find box, but this behaviour may change in near future.

“Currently, the find box only considers its own history when opening, but sometimes the user has selected a term on the page and wishes to search for additional instances (especially when looking at source code), Microsoft explains

“To expedite this (and prevent needing to use the clipboard), this change considers the active text selection (if any) when the find widget is invoked,” the commit reads.

As per another commit, Microsoft is adding a feature that would allow users to use Escape key to close Find dialog when the find box is not the focus.

“As an extension of the work to prepopulate Find with selection, it was determined that being able to close the find widget without having to put keyboard focus back into it (via Ctrl+F) helped eliminate another keystroke,” the commit reads.

At the moment, the aforementioned improvements aren’t available in Canary versions of Chrome and Edge.

    Text Editor on Webpage

I'm creating a website that requires an advanced text editor, similar to the word processor in Google docs. I'm planning on creating the editor from scratch, but I'm not sure what language to use. I was thinking of using a Java applet, but I'm open to other suggestions. Some of the features that are required are highlighting and drawing (such as Microsoft Paint). Any suggestions would be helpful.

  3. how to uninstall chromium

    Hi Scott,

Chromium is the open-source web browser project from which Google Chrome draws its source code. The browsers share the majority of code and features, though there are some minor differences in features and they have different licensing.

I appreciate if you can provide us the following information to help us understand the issue better.

    • Do you get any error while you try to uninstall the chromium browser?

    • How did you install the chromium browser? Is it through Windows store/third party website/any other source?

    • Does the issue persist only while you try to uninstall the chromium browser/ any other programs?
You may follow the below suggestions and check if you are able to uninstall the chromium browser.

Follow the below steps if you have installed the chromium browser through the setup file or through the other source.

    • Press Windows + X keys on the keyboard, and select
      Programs and features.

    • Here you will be able to see the list of programs installed in your computer.

    • Right click on the program which you would like to uninstall and click
      Uninstall.
If you have downloaded the chromium browser through the Windows store, open the Start menu, type chromium in the search bar, right click on the chromium browser from the search bar results and click on uninstall.
