Unfortunately that won't help the "average Joe" whose PC is set to update automatically, because they have been told to use that setting (or they've never even bothered to look at it).

    EXACTLY! *Thumbs*Thumbs

And all the folks here will never convince me this is the way to push an upgrade. Been with Windows since 3.1 but this pushing crap has really pizzed me off.

Oh, and don't get me going about the whole updates thing after it is pushed. Pretty much no control there either. Pitiful! *Mad

  3. I ordered a notebook cooling pad with a large usb powered blue led fan I set the laptop on when leaving it on for any extended periods like the 28hrs. it took to see a system image made up once 10 was on! The drive used had in the main desktop here with it's twin for storage and backup purposes until being replaced by larger drives and had been acting up. It was used temporarily when grabbing the image now copied onto a new drive. If the laptop was going to get "Hot" it certainly would have been during that stretch seemingly taking forever!

The upgrade didn't any longer there then seeing the clean installs that followed. The last clean install was seen without the cooling pad in use and on battery time for both repartitioning the drive to replace the OEM stuff entirely and then on with that one additional 10 install when deciding to see the second backup partition created. I suspect with those other laptops overheating they should have considered getting the additional cooling since laptops are hardwares packed into confined spaces with little or no actual air flow to keep temps down when on for long periods of time.

They are designed mainly for the temp 2-4hrs. durations when on battery not for all day usage when not having something like a gel pad if not another fan or fanless type pad to draw the heat off of them. From your description the CompaQ model you have could use one for sure!

And as I was saying before some here at TF were mentioning that they found 10 already on one day when getting on their machines obviously having left everything set to automatic. When someone mentioned MS changing what options there would be for receiving updates they already have when you compare the options seen for 7 and compare that to 10 which is actually three versions newer.

You have automatic, schedule a restart, or defer all updates as the three options. But that is with 10 without any worry of being replaced by 10 likely 11 or 12 or whatever next in a couple of years however! What will cause a fiascle over time is that you will be in the middle of something in one version and come back to find another and whatever you were working on lost! The project would be on a software found incompatible with the new version and therefore not included in the upgrade! Want to see fists flying! *Banghead "rag a ruffin MS foobars! if i get me hands on ..." You can be sure some choice words will be uttered!

How would that be possible to have windows 10 already installed if you didn't agree to the EULA before installing?

Boy, am I glad that I found this thread. I have a question that I know can be answered here. My question is........I have hidden lots of updates that had anything to do with Windows 10, what I would like to know is........when the free download of Windows 10 expires at the end of July 2016, will Microsoft still try to make me to install Windows 10? Thank you.

Re: Does W10 auto download and auto install? ....... My understanding is that if you received the W10 upgrade files on your hard drive and you were not aware of it, it will not automatically try to install - unless/until you do a restart. That starts the install. If it fails to install it will continuously try over and over again and then it becomes a royal pain to get rid of. At this point if you try to uninstall the hidden files (the W10 upgrade) and you still have WU set to automatically download, it will resend the entire upgrade to you again. On the other hand if it does not fail, the install will continue until you are presented with the EULA - the install stops here waiting for your response. Obviously W10 is not completely installed, but as the process has started, you need to proceed cautiously in getting rid of the W10 files. NB: They are protected files.

As far as I know, once the bits are downloaded, it will NOT install without your say-so. What you'll see is a notice in Windows Update that it's all ready to install - you need to click a nice obvious 'Get Started' button to actually do it.

That interesting but still when is the Windows 10 EULA displayed? All version of windows 10 whether it was the rtm or insider build always had a EULA displayed at least it did for me. I even had one eula pop up-when I did an upgrade between insider builds. When the EULA is displayed you can hit don't agree or cancel then it shouldn't install windows 10 at all or revert back to you previous build or operating system.

Pushing an OS upgrade download even if updates are set to automatic is wrong IMO.

@groze Yes you are correct - as long as you say you don't agree to the EULA, the upgrade ends and returns you to your installed OS. You will get constant nags to install though. You have to get rid of the upgrade files to stop the nags because you can not hide the update in WU.

I think the most important thing is: who is going to pay for people that have very low download caps and now have gone over? I used to be one and I am certain some of them don't even realize it.... yet...
Also filling up roughly 3GB on someone's hard disk without consent... NAY NAY!!!

Yep, I don't want any large download happening without me having to click on something. Forget about the actual install, no download to begin with. Gets back to having full control over upgrade/update downloading which they have taken away.

I would really like to know why MS is doing this and what they are getting out of it. Why do they care if we use our old systems. Eventually we will have to buy a new computer.

  15. aelaan Win User
I heard various things in the channels, the one thing that came back is that IF people would choose to upgrade that the upgrade would be really quick since the software was already on the hard drive. This reason is still bogus: I purchased the hardware, I decide what is going on the hardware. The bad thing is that this plays straight into the hands of other popular operating system.
