Microsoft Removes Information about Windows 11 Bypass for Unsupported PCs

Microsoft has quietly removed its official workaround that allowed users to bypass CPU and TPM requirements for installing Windows 11 on unsupported PCs. Originally introduced in October 2021, the bypass involved modifying a registry key to enable upgrades on older hardware.

The removed guidance, previously available on Microsoft's support site, provided instructions for setting the "AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU" registry value to bypass Windows 11’s stringent hardware checks. However, following the release of Windows 11 version 24H2, Microsoft has edited the support article, eliminating any mention of this method. While the trick itself may still work, Microsoft no longer officially endorses it.

Microsoft has consistently maintained its stance on Windows 11’s strict hardware requirements, recently reaffirming that it has no plans to relax them. The company and its hardware partners, including Dell and AMD, have pushed for users to upgrade to modern PCs rather than attempting to run Windows 11 on older, unsupported devices.

With Windows 10 support set to end in 2025, this change further signals Microsoft's intent to phase out older systems. While some users may still find unofficial ways to install Windows 11 on unsupported PCs, the removal of official documentation suggests Microsoft wants to discourage such workarounds.

As the end of Windows 10 support approaches, many users will face the decision of whether to upgrade their hardware or seek alternative operating systems. For now, Microsoft remains firm in its position that newer hardware is necessary for the best Windows 11 experience.

let use allow the upgrading of windows11 on unsupported PC's

You can upgrade to Windows 11 on unsupported hardware using customized ISO files. These files work the same on unsupported devices as those downloaded directly from Microsoft on supported hardware.

Here are some steps to upgrade to Windows 11 on unsupported hardware:

    1. Download the Windows 11 ISO file from the Microsoft website
    2. Create a bootable USB drive or DVD with the Windows 11 ISO file
    3. Boot your PC from the bootable media
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 11
You can also bypass the hardware checks by replacing the appraiserress.dll file in the Windows 11 ISO with the appraiserress.dll file from the Windows 10 ISO.

Here are some other things you can try:

    • Disable requirements checks
    • Bypass requirements
    • Add AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU to the Mosetup folder in the registry, change value to 1, then run setup
You can check if your device meets the minimum system requirements by downloading the PC Health Check app.

Microsoft doesn't recommend installing Windows 11 on a device that doesn't meet the minimum system requirements. If you do, you might experience compatibility issues and your device might malfunction.

  3. Windows 11 installation on unsupported devices via bypassing requirement checks

There are workstations running Windows 10 on Dell PCs i.e. OptiPlex 7040.

However, the PCs have an unsupported processor for Windows 11 i.e. Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700 CPU.

The idea is to freshly install Windows-11 on them i.e. not perform in place upgrade from Win-10 to 11.

I understand that by making Registry changes to bypass the requirement checks I can install Win-11 (and have done it successfully already).

My concern is that in the future, Microsoft might release Windows-11 Update and that “might” render the workstation unusable.

I am seeking the community’s opinion here. Should I replace all PCs with new PCs just to have Win-11 or the “registry hack” should be safe enough on existing workstations?

install windows 11 on unsupported pc and activate it

Hello! My name is Cristiano. I'm an Independent Advisor. I'm glad to help you.

Yes, you can activate Windows 11 on an unsupported PC if you have a digital license for Windows 10. Here are the steps on how to do it:

    1. Download the Windows 11 ISO file from the Microsoft website.

    2. Create a bootable USB drive or DVD with the Windows 11 ISO file.

    3. Boot your PC from the bootable media.

    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 11.

    5. When you reach the activation screen, select the "I don't have a product key" option.

    6. Click on the "Activate Windows" button.

    7. Windows 11 will automatically activate using your digital license for Windows 10.

Please note that Microsoft has not officially supported installing Windows 11 on unsupported PCs.

It is up to you to decide whether or not to install Windows 11 on an unsupported PC. If you do decide to install it, be sure to back up your important files before you do so.
