I agree. There are a couple of members in the Updates and Activation forum that are just stubbornly waiting for Windows Update.

Used the iso from the Tech Bench. Mounted and ran setup. Flawless.

I am one of those (not sure if I'm one of the ones NavyLCDR is referring to, probably not since I'm less active on this site than some) waiting for MS WU to get it right, it still fails every time, after initial TH2 release it failed at 66% download, now fails after that, and before install. I have iso's of 10240 and 10586, TH2 just d/l from tech bench.

The reason I am waiting for MS to get it right is this is their future, no more new versions with new names, all W10 continually updated through WU. There is no compelling reason to update to 1511, heck there really wasn't a compelling reason to update from Win7 to W10 other than it's where MS is going. W10 won't be cancelled and all W10 users/computers/devices migrating back to Win7.

So if MS doesn't get it right by being able to update to the next version through WU then many users including me will never move off of 10240. They need to get it right so W10 update through WU works every time with very few exceptions, there shouldn't be any need to uninstall this, disable that, jump through this hoop, skip that hoop, etc... to do one of the most basic things an OS does which is an update. This update is the first time I remember ever having any trouble with WU, it worked fine moving to W10 from Win7. The only reason I have any iso from any version is in case I ever need to do a repair install. My box doesn't have a recovery drive.

People can call it stubborn, uncooperative, whatever description that might come to mind. I don't care, I am very capable of doing an upgrade from a flash drive, but as stated before, there isn't anything TH2 does that TH1 doesn't do for my uses.

  6. I had those same thoughts. I think you're right, in that Microsoft needs to make sure updates are as effortless as possible for the average user. It should "just work" ... of course, we all know how flexible that maxim is...

This is probably why Microsoft is trying to force updates. They knew Windows 10 would be broken, so the only way to compel people to do build upgrades would be forcing them to do so.

And yet the most recent MS update for W10 won't update through their own program, windows update *Roflmao2

I didn't have any problem moving from 7 to 10 via WU which accomplished the initial goal of moving users to 10. After you're on 10, well, you're pretty much on your own.

My box isn't much changed from what could be called 'stock', I did build it myself, but I don't overclock, do much in the registry, or modify anything from standard other than privacy settings. I don't have much of interest on the computer but that doesn't mean I want MS knowing anything because I missed a setting.

This W10 OS update to 10586 is the only item that fails, all other general updates download & install no problem. When it was first offered I tried a half dozen different things found on this forum with no fix. The W10 forum is a wealth of good information, but this would appear to be an MS problem, I wonder how many users are unaware they have an update to their OS that failed. Most computer users are not interested in tweaking, or finding solutions to a problem, like our cars, we expect them to work.

I totally agree that Windows updates should "just work." But even if they worked perfectly, I'd still feel more comfortable installing a major upgrade from a local source such as a DVD or USB stick created from an installation ISO file. I guess that's just me.

  11. Microsoft now wants everything done through Windows Update. This is what happened in Windows 8. People have complained. Worse yet, the fall update via WU took me 5 hours to install!

  12. One of the reasons the Media Creation Tool is there is the complaints about failed Windows update upgrades. That and people wanting install media for clean installs. There was a time not so long ago that the only place other than TechNet and MSDN to get ISO's was on the dark side of the net. Bit-torrent etc. It's nice to say "it should just work" and I agree to a point. Trouble is, there are so many variables in what people install on their PC and do to their PC that they just can't account for them all. You will get failures. Be thankful you have a second alternative option.
