Microsoft reveals how the new Windows 10 Enhanced Search feature works

Windows 10’s 2019 update codenamed 19H1 is all set to improve the search feature that has always been widely used by the users. Microsoft recently confirmed that the company is working to address the issues that users have experienced with the built-in search tool and improve the search reliability.

Windows 10’s search feature has been criticized by some users for performance and reliability issues. The Insiders reported problems with the search feature and Microsoft address it by expanding the search to include all indexed file locations.

The search feature sometimes fails to deliver quick and accurate results. Microsoft knows this very well and the company is bringing a new feature to Windows 10 that would completely improve the search experience. Microsoft has started testing out a new search feature with help from insiders and it’s available in Windows 10 Build 18267.

    Enhanced Search Mode

Microsoft has announced the enhanced mode for the search indexer and recently in another blog post, the company revealed how the feature would work.

    How Search Indexer works

The purpose of Search Indexer is to make search process substantially faster. This has been achieved by indexing more locations.

“To improve our search indexing, we created a new feature called Find My Files that enables Windows to search all your folders and drives, instead of limiting search to your documents, pictures, videos, and desktop by default,” writes Microsoft’s Adam.

This feature can be enabled from the Windows search settings in Windows 10 19H1 preview update and you need to select the Enhanced option under Find My Files to begin the indexing process.

According to Microsoft, it will take about 15 minutes for the system to show the results after indexing but it may longer if you have lots of files. After Windows completes indexing your content, you’ll notice that search results are more accurate and are provided much faster than any earlier version of Windows.

You can also exclude a folder from search to make the process faster.

Microsoft excludes the temporary folders and OS files, as well as the other files that are changed rapidly. This is supposed to improve the indexing process and reduce resources usage.

Microsoft is aware of the following bugs in this preview feature:

    • If you update the list of excluded folders, and then switch between Enhanced>Classic>Enhanced those changes might be lost.
    • The UI doesn’t always update right away to show that Enhanced mode is active.
    • The Excluded Folders list will flicker during initial indexing.
    • Indexing temporary folders and OS files—removing them from the excluded list—will slow down your system’s performance. Microsoft advise against removing items from the default list.
    Indexing Status

Microsoft says that the settings page would provide the status of the indexing process. That means you will be to learn what the search indexer was doing in the background. It will show the pending count which basically represents the items that the indexer know it must index at that moment.

At the moment, there is no way to find the remaining time but Microsoft will address this feature if there is enough request from users.

Microsoft testing blue light reduction feature for Windows 10

"Microsoft is slowly revealing new features in its next major update to Windows 10, and it appears blue light reduction feature might be a future addition. The software giant released a new build of Windows 10 testers yesterday with very few visible additions, but Windows enthusiasts have already started picking it apart for clues on new features. Twitter user "Core"has discovered references to a "BlueLightReduction" setting deep within the next major update to Windows 10 (codenamed Redstone 2). It appears to be a setting that will be toggled from the Action Center (notification center) in the operating system.

F.lux has been the most popular option for Windows users looking to reduce blue light in the evenings, but Microsoft's own native toggle will bring this feature to every Windows 10 user. Apple has also integrated a similar feature in iOS 9, but it hasn't announced any plans to bring blue light reduction to Mac OS yet. Microsoft only appears to be testing the feature right now, so there's no guarantee it will ship in the update due early next year. If Microsoft does implement it fully then it will presumably be available on the mobile version of Windows 10, too.

    Windows 10 Tweaks

As you may already know, Windows 10 (as well as Windows 8) allow you to log in with a valid Microsoft account, instead of creating a local account that only works on your machine. However, you may prefer to keep a local account for privacy reasons. If you do, though, some Windows 10 features—like Cortana—may not work. Despite the default behavior, the Windows 10 Store is not one of them. You can still log in to your Microsoft account for just the Store without switching to a full Microsoft account. The process, however, is not terribly obvious. To do so, follow these steps:

    • Launch the Store from your Start menu.
    • Click the user icon next to the search box.
    • Click “Sign-in” from the menu that appears.
    • Choose “Microsoft account” and log in like normal.
    • When the “Make it yours” box appears do not enter your password. Instead, click “Sign in to just this app instead.”
