Windows 10: Microsoft rolls out Unified Update Platform preview update KB4529943

Microsoft released KB4529943 yesterday to devices that participate in the Unified Update Platform preview. The update will be released later to devices that run Windows 10 and don't participate in the UUP preview program.

The company revealed in November 2016 that it had plans to switch the update delivery system of the Windows 10 operating system to the Unified Update Platform in order to reduce the size of average updates and improve the delivery and deployment time of updates that it releases for Windows 10.

The new method could reduce the size of updates by up to 35% according to Microsoft. The new platform uses differential packages to send only the bits that have changed to customer devices and not everything.

A differential download package contains only the changes that have been made since the last time you updated your device, rather than a full build. As we rollout UUP, this will eventually be impactful for PCs where users can expect their download size to decrease by approximately 35% when going from one major update of Windows to another.

KB4529943 -- update for Unified Update Platform for Windows 10, version 1903: November 7, 2019 -- is now made available to customers participating in the UUP test. Microsoft notes that the update should only be installed on devices that participate in the test and not on devices that don't. It is theoretically possible to download the update from the Microsoft Update Catalog website to install it on systems that are not participating.

This update has been made available on a limited basis to customers participating in a preview of Unified Update Platform (UUP). It is currently in a test phase and should only be installed on devices enrolled in the UUP preview.

Microsoft will update the Knowledge Base article when the update is being made available for non-preview customers.

Minecraft beta update rolling out, unifying versions of game

The Better Together update will be the first step in unifying versions of Minecraft for console, mobile and Windows 10. That means players on those platforms will be able to join each other in-game, create, cooperate or compete together on massive servers, and access whatever swish skins and Marketplace adventure maps they own on any of their compatible devices. An update on Unified Update Platform (UUP) for Windows 10

Back in November, we announced the next generation of our delivery technologies called the Unified Update Platform (UUP). Windows Insiders are the first to experience UUP with Insider Preview builds. We began releasing new Insider Preview builds using UUP to Mobile devices first starting with Build 14959 in November. Then we began releasing new Insider Preview builds to PCs using UUP starting with Build 14986 in early December. I wanted to give a small update on where we are today with UUP.

As a recap, one of the biggest benefits UUP brings to our customers is a reduction in download size of build updates on PCs. We’ve converged technologies in our build and publishing systems to enable differential downloads for both PC and Mobile.

For a full build, we refer to this as a canonical download package. It is a self-contained update that contains all files for the update, and does not rely on any files on your device. Canonical download packages tend to be larger in size and may take longer to download.

We are excited to begin releasing PC builds to Windows Insiders using differential download packages! As we discussed in November, as we roll out UUP in our retail release, users can expect their download size to decrease by approximately 35% when going from one major update of Windows to another. For retail users, the first time they get the UUP client code is part of the Creators Update, therefore, they will see the benefit of differential download packages when they go from the Creators Update to the next feature update of Windows.

Windows Insiders have been running the UUP bits for a while now and are already experiencing the benefits of differential packages as seen in the below.

NOTE: Given the frequency of Insider flights, Insider build update diffs are considerably smaller (<1GB) than what we expect for retail users to experience when going from feature update to feature update.

It’s also important to note that Windows Insiders may not get a differential download packages even if we ship them. A baseline build has to be set for differential download packages and if that baseline build is newer than the build Windows Insiders are updating from (in the case where they are not on the latest flight) – they will receive a larger download.

Microsoft Advises Against Installing The Creators Update Manually

Apparently, Microsoft is alerting would-be Creators Update takers that doing so manually (as in, before its automatic update roll-out through Windows Update itself) may result in a bad first experience. Microsoft is therefore suggesting that the majority of Windows 10 users should wait for the Windows Update version of the (ahem) update, due to concerns with some hardware compatibility problems.
