Microsoft rolls out Windows DVD Player for Windows 10 users

I have Microsoft DVD player on both of the machines that I upgraded from Win 8.1 Pro (both with WMC).
This is the most simplistic non-functional POC* program that I have ever seen come out of M$!
    * A more politically correct term than "POS", but both are equally applicable.
If I connect a USB DVD to my Alienware computer, insert a DVD and open DVD player, I get a Playback Error 0x80040287.
If I insert the DVD into my Desktop and then start DVD player, it does indeed recognize and play the DVD, however, compared even to WMC, it is sadly lacking in functionality. The ONLY functionality that I see is to play a physical DVD, NO BluRay or software files AT ALL.
I do have 2 PCs configured as Media machines, one in the Living Room and one in the MBR and with proper setup, programing and the proper Green Button remote, work to perfection (mostly). Both of these PCs are running Windows 7 Pro and will NOT be upgraded to 10 in the foreseeable future.
And M$ is actually expecting customers to PAY for this?

  2. Not if you have the "N" version. *Wink If its Windows x "N", no Media Player. Windows 7 Ultimate didn't get me the DVD Player for some reason? 8.1 Pro with MC did, but 7 ult didn't?

I understand USB DVD being glitchy, but I fail to see anything wrong with how you described it on your Desktop. Bluray is completely different from DVD and is much harder to implement (plus has never been offered by Microsoft). And playback of ripped DVDs is still a legal can of worms that Microsoft can just leave to third parties. It still sounds like it will be perfectly useable by the majority of users, with the rest using VLC or software that came with their pc/Bluray player. If I wanted a bloated swiss army knife of features I'd buy PowerDVD or something else that tries to justify it's high price.

I did the Media Creation tool and used my USB thumb drive to install Win 10 on my Win 8.1 laptop with Media Center. When 10 installed it told me it was uninstalling Media Center, which it did. Anyway I just noticed I was given Windows DVD Player.

Anyway I've got a copy of CyberLink's Power DVD which also support Blu-Ray playback so no biggie there. Besides I've not used Media Center since dumping my TV tuner card some time ago. In fact I don't even have it installed on my Win 8 desktop.

  10. I don't know, politics? All I know is there are N and KN version. I see them listed on MSDN. If you accidentally installed N or your PC came with N installed that would explain Media Player being MIA.

It basically came down to an anti-trust issue in both Korea and Europe with Microsoft. It basically strips away default installed items like Media Player, which I didn't know about, as well as IE, if I read that right.

If you're in the U.S. and want the full fledged item, stay away from N and KN.

Actually the link does a better job of explaining it than I did, so read the link *Wink

You can download it with the Media Creation Tool, Windows 10 N is listed as an option. I can get it on MSDN too. And I'm in Canada
