Microsoft says Windows 10 KB4494441 may install twice for some users

Microsoft yesterday released a new batch of cumulative updates for Windows 10 with security and non-security improvements. Microsoft also published Windows 10 KB4494441 for October 2018 Update as part of the Patch Tuesday, but users are reporting a weird issue where the update would install two times.

For unknown reasons, Windows 10 KB4494441 has been installed twice on a number of devices. Fortunately, Microsoft has already acknowledged the bug and the company is expected to share more details soon.

As per a Reddit discussion, KB4494441 installs without any problems when the user checks for updates via Windows Update. After the system reboot, KB4494441 is re-offered to some users again and it would require another reboot to finish the installation.

Windows 10 cumulative update isn’t offered for the third time and it’ll display ‘You’re up to date’ message if you check for updates again. Users have also noticed that the update will be listed twice on the Windows Update history page.

“2019-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1809 for x64-based Systems (KB4494441) (2) Successfully installed on 5/14/2019,” the history page reads.

“Yeah, I seem to be installing it for the second time as well,” a user confirmed the problem in a Reddit thread.

It’s worth mentioning that you’ll not face any problems if the update installs twice and Microsoft is also investigating the reports.

“Windows 10, version 1809 Update Tuesday update may install twice. We are presently investigating and will provide an update when available,” Microsoft acknowledged the bug in an updated blog post.

Microsoft to push automatic Windows 10 upgrades in 2016

"Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be automatically rolled out next year to all users of its older operating systems who have selected to receive updates.

Until now, users of Windows 7 and 8 have needed to register to upgrade to Windows 10. But that's about to change: soon the OS will be listed as an 'Optional Update' and -- from 2016 -- a 'recommended' update that will automatically install itself, if users have opted to receive updates in that way.*Shadedshun :shadedshu:

You can opt out of automatic updates to avoid this, but Microsoftsays that "we strongly discourage this in today’s connected world because of the constant risk of internet threats". You can also change your Windows Update settings to install critical updates but not recommended ones. Although it's still going to be possible to avoid installation, Microsoft seems quite determined for everyone to be using Windows 10 in near future.

The roll-out of reserved updates was initially staggered but, according to Microsoft, now Windows "will automatically kick off the upgrade process once you have made a reservation".

As an intermediate stage, Microsoft says that it will "soon" publish Windows 10 as an optional update, not installed by default, but accessible to all users.

  3. New install Windows 10 (issue solved)

It's good that you're not experiencing any issues. Unfortunately many folks are, a quick Google search will show the same info im offering the OP.

    Heres a couple examples:

    Here

    Here

It's basically what I mentioned above, small issues here and there ,but nothing to end your day.. for the most part.

I know it's anecdotal, but for my experience 95% of the time it's perfectly fine. The issues I've run into wouldn't be enough for me to roll back , but they would be enough (had I not installed it yet) ,to avoid it for another couple weeks which is why I'm suggesting it to the OP

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update problems and complaints
    • Installation problems with the Fall Creators Update
    • Microsoft Edge problems with the Fall Creators Update
    • Drivers problems with the Fall Creators Update
    • Experience problems with the Fall Creators Update
keep in mind, as of recently, the FCU is installed on 5% of devices roughly.....

Installing Windows 10 on New PC?

I'm going to be building a new PC on Christmas and want to install Windows 10 on it. I have Windows 10 on my current PC, which I installed upgrading from 8.1 with the files on a USB. How do I go about installing a clean copy of Windows 10 on this new PC? I think I recall something about installing it once makes Microsoft recognize your hardware, but since this will be a PC I'm not sure what steps I need to take. Do I need to go 8.1 -> 10 or is there a method of going directly to 10?
