Sense you are just contemplating why it it that you seem to believe that all 8 users should have a free upgrade after four years of Windows 8. . .just wondering. . .*Smile (BTW remember MS did not force you, or anyone else to use 8, it was a choice, and noting more.

I partially disagree. When only 8 is provided on retail systems they aren't giving the users a lot of options plus when a new version of Windows is released it becomes much harder to find legit copies of older versions. In addition if the manufacturer does not provide drivers for older versions it becomes impossible to downgrade. Plus the average users isn't going to go to the trouble of using anything other than what is on the system including switching over to Linux. Most don't collect all the license keys that they can get their hands on and customize their own systems. Therefore for most the only choice if whether or not to get a system with Windows 8 on it.

Sorry, albeit you still had a choice. A great deal of folks who didn't like 8 went backwards to 7, xp, and some even to vista. There were those who made the jump to Linux and even Mac OS 10. So to even think there wasn't a choice really makes no sense.

I viewed 8.1 as more of an upgrade to 8.0 rather than a new OS. Also I really don't think MS is going to give Win9 away to anyone.. I could of course be wrong but I think that a minimal charge will go along with the new OS. But if MS did give Win9 away using the same key for Win8 users would make it hard for users of Xp,Vista and 7 to migrate to the free version. Wouldn't they have to get a copy of 8 before they could get the free 9??

Charging 29..99 or 39.99 for everyone and supplying a new key would be more likely they way they will go in my way of thinking.

I've switched back to Win7 a few times and I still migrate back to 8.1 Update 1.
I would wonder how MS would handle supplying a free OS(Win9) to some consumers and not all?? I have a key for Vista, Win7, Win8 and 8.1(I got my copy from Tech-net and I got a new key for it). It would be a nightmare to manage all of the keys and who gets a free copy. Heck, with all of the keys out on the Internet now how would MS determine who is the valid holder of a key??

That would be very tricky.. IMO.

Well, I doubt they will give anything away to start with. So a key would be necessary. We're talking about Windows not Linux.. nothing is free. *Wink

Oh and if it were by some chance .. free. MS would want to verify that they give the copy to a person who is upgrading from an existing copy of Windows and you would have to supply a key to get your copy. No key no free copy and when you get your copy you get a new key to prevent piracy as much as possible.

I could see M$ giving away W9 to all XP, W7 and Vista owners and even W8 as it would be a cruel joke as most hardware that is running legacy windows OS even W8 as the hardware needs to be replaced in order to install it, some users could not install the W8 update because it required a new CPU function.

Xp and some Vista users would definitely need a major hardware upgrade to run W9.
It shouldn't be a big deal with W7 and W8 as the hardware should more up to date and more compatible to W9.. I would hope at least.

My previous(I got used) PC was using Vista and I installed W7 with no issues but when I went to use W8 the motherboard chip set was not compatible and it was causing major problems when I used W8.

I'm not saying that there isn't a choice but most people aren't going to bother to change it or may not be able to due to lack of knowledge or resources.
