    Microsoft Security Essentials causing PC to go all weird and slow after logging in.


    I have a Lenovo T430 laptop running 64 bit Windows 7 Pro.

    A few days ago it stopped booting up properly.

    I appears that the latest virus definitions file for Microsoft Security Essentials has something in it which makes the laptop jam up after logging in to Windows.

    I can get it working temporarily by disabling MSE real time protection or by using a restore point to revert to virus definitions from a few days ago or by doing:


    cd /d "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client"

    MpCmdRun.exe -RemoveDefinitions -All



    and rebooting. Which seems to be an alternative way of reverting to older virus definitions.


    How can I find out what file is confusing/crashing Microsoft Security Essentials?

    Hi Bryan,

    Microsoft Security Essentials was upgraded to Windows defender and it was a default security software from Windows 8. You cannot have both as they are one.

    Since you get this annoying popup at the startup i suggest you to disable any Microsoft Security Essentials entries in Startup tab.

    • Open the Task manager. by pressing Press CTRL+Shift+ESC.
    • click on Startup tab
    • Right click on Microsoft Security Essentials entry and click on Disable.

    Restart the computer and check if that helps.
