Windows 10: Microsoft Security Essentials Scores Incredibly Well in New Antivirus

Yes, I can run computer without any protection too but time i have to spend by being extra careful is far longer than eventual slowdown caused by adequate protection. Only some common sense plus some protection without great impact on performance and undue risks. For me and like me with a lot of experience that should be enough but to tell somebody just starting or without any knowledge or not caring to go on internet, swap files etc. I would never recommend any less than what I use but also much stronger protection and even that in many cases is not enough. Even for the price of slowdown it's better in such cases to be as protected as possible than to loose everything. People that don't know much about safety, usually lack the knowledge to do proper backups and to get out of eventual tight spots.

 

Been using MSE since it was introduced back in 2009 without any other antivirus, and to date have had no problems or viruses, thus really see no reason for anything else. . . Also this thread is really fun to read. . .it also shows how Swagger is showing again just how full of himself he truly is. . .*Smile

 

I've been using Windows Defender as my sole protection since i installed Windows 10 about 2 months ago and finding that it works really well....In fact, only once did i encounter a virus. I had gone to a website that managed to launch a high level attack trojan on my system (My browser, Google Chrome is usually pretty good at warning me to go back to safety before it is too late but this must have jumped on at super sonic speed...lol).

Anyway, the window came up from Defender telling me about it while it worked on "kicking it's butt!" which it did and then quarantined it for me...Then, all i had to do was manually indicate that i would like it to trash it off the system permanently and it did so).

My faith in Defender immediately went up 1000% *Smile

 

I used McAfee aka CrApafee security suite bloatware briefly a few years back it was free from my ISP and it was a resource hog and the updates consistently caused problems in win 7 on my configuration .

I moved on to Avast free and Malwarebytes and aside from the annoying pop ups Avast free was fine and not as bloated as the unecessary security suite bloatware .

On 3 Windows 10 RTM PC's here including this dual boot Windows 10 RTM /10575 box I use Win. Defender plus Mbam free plus Mbam Anti-Exploit .


Nothing's foolproof though and sometimes it too late by the time the resident AV and and malware scanners recognize something new out in the wild but so far using windows 10 test builds since 10029 in late Feb. and later RTM as well no significant virus or malware infections here and these 3 PC's are used a lot by myself and the family .

OTOH the i7 workstation is still on 7 x64 ( for a number of good reasons ☻) and using AVG free and Mbam free plus Mbam Anti-Exploit .

Lastly I almost always use a Windows standard user account on the web instead of the admin accounts .
I've got my bootloader set to default to the std. user account in 10575 on this box it's easy to switch over to the admin account or restart and load RTM or save something in those user accounts if I need to .

 

Whatever one uses or doesn't use for real time protection, or "protection", it's best to go thru whole system with a fine comb using several other programs available that address specific threats . Would be surprised what can wiggle out from underneath the stone. I do that every time I make full system backup, suspect something or get bored.

 

Right .....That's true it never hurts to look around with a fine tooth comb like you say ,know what you are supposed to have and be able to spot something that you're not and scrub things now and then . Sometimes stuff can sneak in nothing's foolproof and downloads like to piggyback stuff these days and then there are the banner ad drive by's even at the most legitimate websites . Cnet's download dot com and Softpedia and a lot of hosted free downloads in general are toolbar hijacker and or malware geysers .

 

Nothing wrong with AVG or AVAST IMO and maybe some others I never used aside from some minor annoyances to buy and upgrade and maybe some resource use and *maybe slower boot times or not .

ofc. mbam and mbam anti exploit are a must here .

I always used 3rd party stuff and mbam outside of Windows 10 usually AVG or Avast free and ofc mbam and MacAfee in the Win 3- Win 95 days before it became a bloated train wreck . Starting with XP I used AVG free
then Avast or AVG free and mbam Until win 10 .

I'm not so sure a 3rd party AV program would not be better than Win Defender . OTOH with Win defender and mbam and mbam anti exploit so far in Win 10 on 3 PC's no problems yet but I'm not so foolish to think anything other than unplugging from the web is foolproof .

 

I use 3rd party AV's for years, just like lots of us. I have 3 right now, 2 of those 3 run together. My 3rd one is SuperantiSpyware with a life time license. MY Malwarebytes Pro also has a lifetime license. I have seen MB miss some pup's and SuperAntiSpyware catch some that MB didn't. So I see nothing wrong in having more than one av app installed. As far as that "other" persons statements, its just not worth our time to reply those comments. I agree with most all of the comments on this thread. Whatever works for your system and makes you feel secure is fine with me. *Smile

I used Avast free and and MSE /Defender together and AVG free with MSE together along with mbam on a couple of Win 7 x64 boxes here for a few years no problems attributable to that .

Convention says not to run two resident AV programs together although they were doing that at Cnet or one of the writers was IIRC. I just set mutual exclusions for each respective AV program and never had a problem aside from a nasty Conflict malware variant on one of the boxes 6 months before any of the AV programs heard of it , it was a bear to clean out I had to use several one time extra strength cleaners and edit the reg and a lot of files afterwards that stiff was even in the root directory, or root folder I would have been able to do a clean install much easier.

FWIW IE 11 and Chrome survived after some cleaning but F/F was totally destroyed beyond repair and I wasn't even using it .

It came in a drive by from a legitimate nationally know forum website page it even got though the ad blockers and lot of folks without another PC went dark and either way had to wipe their drives and re install.

IIRC MSE vs Avast and AVG had different Heuristic behavior patterns in both cases so the idea was you got more coverage that way . I don't know if you can do that in Windows 10 though and most of the MS software engineers at Windows Insider forum are clueless I honestly don't know what they get paid for not to mention viruses are allegedly becoming less popular and more malware is appearing .

 

Resident AV programs malware scanners and RTP like mbam & mbam anti exploit and Browser sand boxes are like insurance if they work when you need them they are very good ...... nothing is foolproof though but nothing wrong with some protection .
I use Chrome as my default browser and generally never ignore its occasional warnings .

 

If something like that had happened to me, I would most likely just go to one of my backup images and re-install my OS. But on another note, Malwarebytes didn't need any special setting to run along side my Norton 360 Pro. I just make sure they don't run their checks at the same time, and that's all that is needed. I spoke with one of the techs at MB and they have made Malwarebytes to run compatible with programs like Norton. I May switch back to the Windows firewall, when my Norton subscription expires. Still thinking about that. But I am not going to switch until Norton expires. I am running it on both my computers, along with MB which is also on both my computers. I LOVE MB !!! lol

 

I would be very interested on reading about this "much improved" new version of Defender , i mean i heard that it's better but i would like to read about the "hows and why's" , can you provide a link ?

 

Hi Count , i agree , i would bet that many computer users these days think that since their computer is working well the chance of it having some type of malware is low , thats not always the case, from from it actually .

Todays rootkit's are purposely designed to hide and be very difficult to detect . Your computer is unlikely to show any symptoms at all , thats whats so scary about them .
