Windows 10: Microsoft sets stage for massive Windows 10 upgrade strategy

On a more serious note, I wonder if Microsoft executives have bought into house-internal studies that say that Microsoft must roll out Windows 10 in these forceful ways or else lose the battle against Google/Apple.

You have to take into account that some members here behave like Apple "Fan Boys" (the huge increase of such was the one thing the W8 series succeeded at).

They claim that W10 has never (at any time) had any bugs or security slip ups and any reports about such things are lies designed to make W10 look bad.

Even if that were true, it is of no relevance to issue of Microsoft's behaviour.

 

Have two computers that I've upgraded, laptop Win7 Pro to W10 Pro, desktop Win7 Home to W10 Home. Both upgraded from 7 to 10 with no troubles using Windows Update, the laptop updated to TH2 1511 no problems, the desktop refuses to update via WU. Really no difference between 7 or 10 in daily use for either device, both have SSD OS drives, no noticeable difference in cold start boot, 30 seconds or so.

Win7 the little things worked all the time, W10 not so much, sometimes no shutdown sound, other times it works. Hate the way WU functions working in the background, I never had mine set to download/install, wanted to see what was being downloaded. And had a choice to take or not take any update, I took them but I was able to choose.

My wife has Win7 Home on her laptop and doesn't want to move to W10 at this time, the nag screens started getting more aggressive a month ago. I've installed GWX Control Panel and set it to remove the icon, not allow anything W10 to be downloaded, and monitor to ensure the user is alerted if MS try's to push things. It's working like a charm, I don't like to be bullied or social engineered into something. If W10 is that good, people will move to it, for me it's acceptable, but not as user friendly or stable as Win7.

And there are those that seem take personal offense if a poster says something derogatory about W10, not everybody is a fanboy of W10 and there is no compelling reason to move to it. And the recent update to TH2 1511, what a fiasco that's turning out to be. Sure you can go here, download that, disable this, remove something else, install this, stand up and turn around three times, and end up with something that should have been easily accomplished with WU. A basic task of windows update, and already it's hit or miss with the recent Nov. release. When they set up their newest OS to be updated through WU, then it needs to work every time. Many users don't care one iota about doing anything with their computers except using them, they don't care how it works, or how to download and install the latest OS update.

AFAIK iOS updates without incident, that's the point MS needs to get to if they're going to operate W10 like that. IMO they released W10 probably a year too early, in their haste they've caused more than a few users to become disgusted and at the very least have nothing good to say about MS, at the worst (from MS point of view) they've moved on to something else, Linux, Mac, and maybe ditched a computer/laptop for an iPad, or smartphone.

 

I would say several of the prolific members on this site are Windows 10 fan boiz and some are definitely paid Microsoft shrills. I don't like Windows 10 and have recently even lost complete interest in testing 10 on my virtual and real machines. It looks awful, the start menu sucks and is not configurable. The most asked for feature on Windows 10 was Aero and this was completely ignored by the development group. With the data mining, adverts and an OS that looks bad why would I want to be an unpaid beta tester. What I object to as an owner of Windows 7 Ultimate and also several Windows 8 Pro (and Media Centre) licences is Microsoft forcing an OS I have tried for over 12 months and I do not see the need for nor want. I have my machines set by their (Microsoft) approved settings and they are going to be playing with fire if they take it much further and override Group Policy settings. So I don't want it or need it screwing up my machines. If you like it fine but as far as I know we are free to run whatever software we like on our machines. Also nowhere in any agreement does it state that M$ can pull the rug out from under the customer. I expect Windows 7 to be supported until 2020 and Windows 8.1 until 2023. Windows ME had 5 years support as it was a consumer OS and at the time Professional NT OS got 10 years life and consumers got 5 years. 95,98,ME known as the 9X lasted from August 95 until 2006 so if you got in on 95 you got a good deal. So I am staying on 7 and I have even taken down my 8.1 OS to save them for future media centre use when 7 goes EOL.

 

For some reason you feel you need to explain this to the so called Fan Boiz. . .must be a reason, not sure why. . .we already know what your stand is on Win 10, hence why do you have to explain it every chance you get, or think you need. . .Good luck with your Windows 7, and whatever OS you desire to use. . . *Smile

 

Lee why don't you take your MAC and use it to buy some games or software so you can stop having useless comments about things you know nothing about. I have never cared what you think nor do I care if you don't like what I say. I have every right to complain about the attitude of the OS vendor just as you have every right to post your comments. I would say that a MAC user is hardly a windows fan but more likely an Apple user.

I have a fast computer i7 3770, 16 GB RAM, SSD boot drive. Windows 7 was fully booted and ready to go (including Skype, Onedrive and Dropbox) in under 30 seconds. Windows 10 will get to the desktop in under 30 seconds then pokes along with loading the above applications.

On my laptop, I had Windows 10 but it was intolerably slow in all aspects even though it is well above the minimum specs for Win 10 with 6 GB ram, Quad core processor and 1 TB free disk space. I have turned off the nag screen about updating to Win 10 and if it comes back in a fashion that I cannot get rid of it, that will be my cue to ditch Microsoft on that laptop and go for a (Yuk) Mac.

I like to have control over my computers and with Win 10 it isn't the easiest thing to do. Automatic updates just come down and install and there is little control over what is being installed. I learned years ago the Microsoft updates for hardware are notorious for being out of date. I had a battle between my hardware manufacturers and Microsoft update. Microsoft would update a driver and the hardware manufacturer would come back and say the drivers were out of date and to update. I update and Microsoft would roll-back the updates. This is totally unacceptable.

All those useless apps that are included with Win 10 that can't be uninstalled is outrageous. I have been using computers for 35 years and have never seen such a barrage of garbage foisted on me that I can't get rid of.

Win 10 at this point is in my opinion a basic Alpha edition and not fit for general distribution. It is stable but that is all that I can say for it.

 

This small program helped tremendously on my wife's laptop, she isn't ready to move to W10 yet, and the nag screens have gotten more aggressive in the last month or so. In this forum I found GWX Control Panel Ultimate Outsider - Software Downloads after setting it up, there are no more nag screens, it even has a monitor function to alert the user if MS is trying to pull shenanigans by sneaking W10 items into your computer.

Fully agree that it (W10) was IMO released before it's time. After using W10 for several months (was an insider since Mar.) and now after RTM it still feels unfinished.

But give GWX Control Panel a try, it's great for anybody that isn't ready to move to W10 yet, and hates the bullying, nag screens that pop up frequently.

My own experience with one computer upgraded to Windows 10 has been positive, but I am not ready to upgrade my other computers yet. I hope that the complaints will subside to normal, acceptable levels before the free upgrade year is over.

Also why are you telling her to go play with her Mac.

 

With the way MS is practically forcing the conversion of W-10 on users (unsuspecting users in many cases) I doubt the complaints will go down. In fact, I think the complaints could go up because many of the users targeted may not be prepared to deal with the potential consequences of the install. Those that have not upgraded to W-10 either don't want it or are totally unaware of it. I suspect there are millions in both groups. This could get ugly as we get into 2016 as MS continues this assault. Any automatic downloads pertaining to W-10 should be strictly limited to basic, general information and anything beyond that should 100% voluntary and we all know that is far from the case.

My trust for MS is at the bottom of the scale right along with CNET.
