Windows 10: Microsoft starts testing feature experience pack for Windows 10 21H1

Windows 10 version 21H1 is a minor update and it’s due to arrive in the first half of 2021, possibly between May and June 2021. Just like the previous version 20H2 (October 2020 Update), Windows 10’s first update of the year will be making small tweaks only.

No major new features will be added at all with Windows 10 version 21H1. Although some changes were present in the October 2020 Update, it looks like version 21H1 is going to ship with security and “quality” improvements only, which includes one new feature for Windows Hello and minor tweaks for enterprises.

Fortunately, Microsoft has now started testing the feature experience pack for Windows 10 21H1. With the feature experience pack, Microsoft is planning to launch new features for the OS outside of the ’21H1′ update release.

Microsoft is splitting up key Windows features into smaller downloads and you’ll be able to download the experience pack without installing a huge feature update.

This could allow you to download minor new features for File Explorer, Settings, etc. without having to wait for the Sun Valley update.

Today, Microsoft is rolling out Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3030.0 to those running Windows 10 version 21H1. This update comes with improvements for the software keyboard and it will also improve the reliability of the handwriting input panel.

In the next update, File Explorer will be updated with support for the built-in screenshot tool, so you can directly paste the screenshots and File Explorer will automatically generate a name.

Last year, Microsoft stated that it has only started testing this new process and it will initially include minor improvements. In the next few months, the Redmond giant plans to deliver bigger changes via the feature experience packs.

This would be a notable shift in how Windows 10 is updated and it’s possible that Microsoft could also reduce the possibility of major bugs that have hit the software recently.

What is the Windows 10 Windows Feature Experience Pack?

As Microsoft continues to expand the pool of people who are getting the Windows 10 May 2020/2004 update automatically, it's also expanding the group that will have something called the "Windows Feature Experience Pack" installed on their machines. Given this feature pack, which has been known about since at least December 2019, is coming to users' machines en masse, you'd think Microsoft would be sharing more about what it is and why it's there. But nope.

I asked again this week about the Feature Experience Pack. A spokesperson provided the official response: "Microsoft has nothing to share."

So, what about an unofficial response? I've been asking around and got some information about the Windows Feature Experience Pack.

You can see the Windows Feature Experience Pack listed as one of the Features on Demand for Windows 10 and Windows Server. This list also includes Internet Explorer, Notepad, the DirectX Configuration Database, Paint, PowerShell ISe, Quick Assist, the Print Management Console, and more. The Windows Feature Experience Pack, listed as available on Windows 10 version 2004 and later, "includes features critical to Windows functionality." Microsoft advises users not to remove this collection of Windows client shell components, which is 44.15MB in size...

Hello Windows Insiders,

We are testing a new process for delivering new feature improvements to our customers outside of major Windows 10 feature updates. Through the Windows Feature Experience Pack, we can improve certain features and experiences that are now developed independently of the OS. Currently, only a limited number of features are being developed this way, so we are starting out very scoped. By testing this process first with Windows Insiders, we hope to expand the scope and the frequency of releases in the future. Eventually, Windows Feature Experience Pack updates will get folded into the already existing servicing process for Windows 10 and delivered to customers that way through Windows Update.

Today, we are releasing Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.1070.0 to the Beta Channel. This update includes the following improvements:

Based on Insider feedback, you can now use the built-in screen snipping experience in Windows (WIN + SHIFT + S) to create a snip of your screen and paste it directly into a folder of your choice in File Explorer to save the screenshot there. Try it out!

Using the touch keyboard in a portrait posture on a 2-in-1 touch device now supports split keyboard mode.

Windows Feature Experience Pack updates will be delivered to Insiders through Windows Update just like builds and cumulative updates are. Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel can go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates to receive the Windows Feature Experience Pack update. Please note that in order to receive this update, Insiders in the Beta Channel will need to have 20H2 Build 19042.662 installed. Insiders will need to reboot to enable the above mentioned improvements and can check their Windows Feature Experience Pack version by going to Settings > System > About.

What is the Windows 10 Windows Feature Experience Pack?

Personally i find the segmentation of the "parts" of Windows, like Windows Feature Experience Pack, or the new Edge, and other parts good.

This means eventually when it comes to version upgrades, only the core layers of Windows will be updated, which might make most upgrades "boring" unless they need to add a new container, or abstraction layer for a new functionality or API support.

Is this features pack listed in all apps as uninstallable ?
I remember they added some other features pack or similar long ago and it showed up in the apps list for some odd reason.
