    Microsoft Store crashes on startup (with solution for Windows 10 N)


    Hi,


    after updating the Microsoft Store app to v11810.1001.12.0, it stopped working. The store app window pops up for two or three seconds and then disappears again.


    The following error message is written to the Windows Event Log (Source = DistributedCOM):
    "The server Microsoft.WindowsStore_11810.1001.12.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe!App did not register with DCOM within the required timeout."

    Had this problem on two development VMs, both running Windows 10 Enterprise N.

    On my other dev VMs running Windows 10 Enterprise not-N versions, this problem didn't occur.


    Tried WSReset, Reset via settings, Windows Update Troubleshooter. Nothing worked.


    SOLUTION: Install Media Feature Pack for N versions of Windows 10 from
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/mediafeaturepack

    As you may already know, Windows 10 (as well as Windows 8) allow you to log in with a valid Microsoft account, instead of creating a local account that only works on your machine. However, you may prefer to keep a local account for privacy reasons. If you do, though, some Windows 10 features—like Cortana—may not work. Despite the default behavior, the Windows 10 Store is not one of them. You can still log in to your Microsoft account for just the Store without switching to a full Microsoft account. The process, however, is not terribly obvious. To do so, follow these steps:

    • Launch the Store from your Start menu.
    • Click the user icon next to the search box.
    • Click “Sign-in” from the menu that appears.
    • Choose “Microsoft account” and log in like normal.
    • When the “Make it yours” box appears do not enter your password. Instead, click “Sign in to just this app instead.”
