Windows 10: Microsoft Teams app now available for all Surface Hub devices

The Microsoft Teams app for Surface Hub is now available for all Surface Hubs.

The app was originally made available a few months ago for members of the Windows Insiders Program, and we have now released it for all Surface Hubs running Windows 10 Team Edition OS 1703.15063.1292 (KB4343889, August 30, 2018) or later.

The Microsoft Teams app for Surface Hub, downloadable from the Microsoft Store or from the Microsoft Store for Business, brings the Microsoft Teams meetings experience, including one-touch join and up to four incoming video streams, as requested by many members of our community.

One of the questions we were asked a lot when we tested this app, was: “What happens to the Skype for Business client on the Surface Hub, and does having the Microsoft Teams app cancels the Skype for Business client?”
We made sure you can use both on the Surface Hub. Whether you’re in the process of testing Microsoft Teams in your organization or in the middle of a migration, or maybe you’re already using Microsoft Teams and would still like to preserve your ability to join Skype for Business meetings for the Surface Hub, you can setup the Microsoft Teams app to work in one of the following three modes:

Mode 0 - Keep as is.
Use this mode if your organization still uses Skype for Business primarily, but you want the ability to join Microsoft Teams meetings from Surface Hub.

Mode 1 - Microsoft Teams Hybrid.
The Microsoft Teams ‘Call’ tile will appear on the Welcome Screen.
The Microsoft Teams tile on the Start Menu will replace the default Skype for Business tile and will show the Microsoft Teams client when launched. You will also see the one-touch ‘Join’ button to join scheduled Microsoft Teams meetings.
Scheduled Skype for Business meetings will launch the Skype for Business client when you hit the one-touch ‘Join’ button for Skype for Business meetings.
Use this mode if you’re transitioning to Microsoft Teams from Skype for Business and/or your organization uses Microsoft Teams primarily, but you want the ability to join Skype for Business meetings.

Mode 2 - Microsoft Teams.
The Microsoft Teams tiles are displayed on the Welcome Screen and Start Menu. All Skype for Business functionalities are disabled.
Use this mode if you’re only using Microsoft Teams.

How should you prepare?

Update

Check your Surface Hub’s update history to confirm that KB4343889 is installed.

If it isn’t, check for new updates from Windows Update and install it.

Download

The Microsoft Teams app for Surface Hub does not install as part of Windows Update - It’s a Windows store app and can be downloaded from the Windows Store directly to your Surface Hub or pushed from the Windows Store for Business via Intune.

Configure

Installing the app itself will not trigger any change. Similar to the existing Skype for Business client, it becomes part of the Windows 10 Team Edition OS and will need additional configuration to set the desired mode as described earlier in this post. You should not launch the app from the Windows Store app on the Surface Hub.

Locally:

We created three provisioning packages, one for each mode respectively. Download the package that suits your desired configuration to a USB stick and add it to your Surface Hub;
From the Surface Hub settings app, go to Surface Hub, Device Management, and choose “Add or remove a provisioning package”:

Click “Add a package” and add the package for your desired mode:

Mode 0 – Skype for Business with Microsoft Teams functionality for scheduled meetings.

Mode 1 – Microsoft Teams with Skype for Business functionality for scheduled meetings.

Mode 2 – Microsoft Teams only.

Note: Previously installed packages may already be displayed in this screen.

Centrally:

If using Intune , Create a new Device Configuration Profile for the Microsoft Teams app. There are two dedicated CSPs we're using to configure the app on the Surface Hub. Both must be configured present on the Surface Hub for the Teams app to work:

./Vendor/MSFT/SurfaceHub/Properties/SurfaceHubMeetingMode is the CSP that replaces the .ppkg files you'll be using if you're manually installing the app. The setting comes with the values of 0, 1 or 2 as described above.

The Data type for this setting is Integer and you can choose the values 0, 1 or 2 as illustrated in the following image:

The next CSP is ./Vendor/MSFT/SurfaceHub/Properties/VtcAppPackageId, representing the app ID that's replacing Skype for Business.
The value for this CSP is always Microsoft.MicrosoftTeamsforSurfaceHub_8wekyb3d8bbwe!Teams
The Data type for this CSP is String. Copy and paste the value from the line above as illustrated in the following image:

If using another MDM solution that supports SyncML, use the following sample to push the configuration:

The A Surface Hub Tour app is an easy-to-follow app to familiarize yourself with the Surface Hub's features and how you can get the most out of them through a hands-on, step-by-step, fun experience. We've named it A Surface Hub Tour to ensure that it sits right at the top of your Surface Hub's app list, easy to find and launch for both you and your users. Make it available for your users to open and explore to enable them to quickly and easily learn how their Surface Hub does much more than just providing a large screen for projection and presentations.

Surface Hub is an all-in-one collaboration device built with integrated features that make not just presenting, but sharing, collaborating and brainstorming easy, secure, and productive. A Surface Hub Tour demonstrates these capabilities in a game-like format that can be explored at your own pace, demonstrating how to get the most from Surface Hub's most compelling features, like Whiteboard, Skype for Business, Office 365, Connect, and of course, several options to give us feedback to improve.

Configure one of the new amazing wallpapers included with the app and selectable from your Surface Hub settings to direct your users to the A Surface Hub Tour learning experience, presenting them with an invitation Come and Explore the Surface Hub by launching the app. Once in the app, you'll be prompted to choose an avatar, and then select from a list of lessons, or worlds. You can follow the recommended sequence, or explore the worlds at your own pace and in your own order. You can also sign-in to save your avatar, prizes, progress and your favorite features. In each world your avatar will participate and guide you in short exercises that demonstrate the Surface Hub's capabilities. At the completion of each world, your avatar will earn a surprise to celebrate!

Introducing Microsoft Surface Hub

One of the new pieces of hardware unveiled by Microsoft at its Windows 10 event on Wednesday was its Surface Hub, a TV workspace with pen input. And while the company has already started promoting its functionalities, we’re just starting to learn what the device features under the hood.

Microsoft designed two Surface Hub models: a 55- and 84-inch version, both of which are supposed to enhance a team’s ability to communicate, collaborate and share their ideas. Microsoft showed off how the device works on stage,but here are some of the tech specs:

55-inch display at 1080p or 84-inch at 4K

Displays locked at 120 HZ for no-lag writing

Optically bounded displays for extra clarity (as on the Surface Pro)

Supports up to 100 simultaneous touch points

Supports up to 3 pens simultaneously

Powered by Intel Core CPUs

2 x 1080p cameras and a mic array

HDMI, Miracast, NFC, Bluetooth, USB ports

Powered by a lightweight version of Windows 10

Of course, this isn’t the full list of specs and features, as Microsoft hasn’t shared the final details about Surface Hub. We expect to see a few more differences between the two versions of the device before it finally reaches market.

Windows 10 Anniversary Update for Surface Hub now available

Starting today, October 13th, the Windows 10 Anniversary Update for Surface Hub will be released to customers through Windows Update.

Since we began shipping Surface Hubs in March, we’ve been inspired by how customers such as Bartlitt Beck, European School of Management and Technology, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Case Western Reserve University, SHoP Architects, Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin and the Royal Academy of Music have used Surface Hub to bring their organizations together to work, create and learn.
Demand for Surface Hub is strong. To date, we have shipped to over 600 customers in 24 different countries and that number continues to grow.

As part of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update for Surface Hub, we’ve made deep investments in inking and content sharing experiences. Here are some of the great new features on their way:

Inking support across Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

People love inking on Surface Hub! With this update, we are extending inking across Word, Excel and PowerPoint. This means the people can now pick up a pen to start annotating directly on their Word docs or Excel sheets on the hub. We’ve also added a “Draw” toolbar in the ribbon with a variety of inking tools.

Support for simultaneous Pen and Touch

Now people can use both hands to edit content on the fly, or use a mixture of pen and touch when multiple people are collaborating with the Surface Hub. This is possible even while several apps are open simultaneously.

Save & Recall Whiteboards directly through OneDrive

One of the most loved features of Surface Hub is the ability to send whiteboards to meeting participants via e-mail as image or OneNote file. Now, we’ve added the ability to sign in, to save and recall Whiteboards directly from OneDrive. This helps people pick up right where their last meeting ended with a simple and secure sign-in experience.

Support for 3rd party peripherals

We’ve added support for third-party peripherals to offer choice and flexibility in audio, video and microphone configuration. Our Surface Hub and Skype for Business engineering teams have successfully tested the following devices. We will continue testing across our partner portfolio in the upcoming months to confirm additional peripherals.
