I don't want anything only as good as IE. Microsoft should try to make Edge the best browser in existence. Nothing less should be acceptable to them. If they make it good enough, they won't have to beg anybody to try it.

Then you probably don't need anything more than just Flash. Unfortunately this is not the case for all web users...

Totally agree. They could start by adding support for ActiveX, legacy IE plugins and Java. This way Edge will be fully-functional as IE and is a step forward to make us switch. Then they should add new features.

  5. Cant java be downloaded separate so that those that want to use it can, and for us that don't use just don't have to bother with it

No, Java works through a web browser for sites that depend on it. There is no stand-alone version. To use these sites (such as Eurobank's site to do web-banking) you need Java, so if cannot be done in Edge I have to use another browser. There is no other workaround. As it is Edge is good for leisure web surfing. Not much more.

  7. I do not leisure web surf believe me I go on all the sites I used to go on with IE, only this time I don't get sorry we could not open this site or sorry IE has encontered a problem and needs to close.
Edge goes in and I don't now get thrown out.
So don't run away with that is all it is good for,
Have you tried it and disabled IE has I don't have it at all on my computer

You will find that was only recently updated from what it had been showing a few years back! The 2014 report was based on the only then latest revision MS was making by extending support for Vista an extra year over what had been seen back when 7 was new. Originally January 2016 was the deadline prior to XP's demise a year ago April. Not that XP will ever be missed here of course! *really

WRONG! I am presently running IE 11 on 7! showing it will run on 8 and 8.1 as well those being the two newer versions proceeding 10. The total end of support comes for IE 8 on Vista and IE 9 and 10 for 7, 8, 8.1, and now 10 bringing in Edge while you can still manually pin IE 11 32bit or 64bit to the Start as well as task bar.

You think MS is going to make Edge much better then it is? That would be a grand stand of all time seeing MS make Edge better and more secure then every other browser out there knowing their track record with IE 6.0 to start with being a large security hole!

No they simply tossed their beta flavor of Edge in on 10 to force everyone to try it out long before it was even scheduled to be ready. 10 is a workshop experience rather then the final RTM being pushed for a much larger beta testing audience presently simply to get more people upgrading to 10.

You will notice that there is a new Windows Insider build popping up every month since the 10240 was first seen at the end of July upto the 10565 at the moment. Once you have a final version out in the past the next build would then include a service pack as far as the dealer end's optical media went. But MS is now dropping optical media entirely in favor of downloads and flash drives.

Once you have everybody or as many as you can running the newer you can then proceed to dump support for the older what evers which include the older flavors of IE now relatively outdated! IE does need an updated replacement but not seen in any general release as the beta but the finished product. Why do you think there's that "Windows Feedback" option first seen in any supposed RTM? 10 isn't the final RTM! MS saw this release for feedback stating they wanted to... didn't quite yet... make 10 the best version ever. You have to read between the lines there!

I'll say it again. Abandoning support for current technologies just for "security reasons" is not the correct approach. Hackers will eventually find a way to hack our computers using the new technologies. That's why Antivirus and Firewall are for. Anyone connected to the internet without at least Antivirus (even a frequently updated Windows Defender will do) is asking for trouble! Not supporting ActiveX controls and Java to prevent hackers is only a temporary solution. It's a matter of time until hacker find a security hole in Edge as well. Besides not every single website supports new technologies, so common sense dictates that Edge should have a minimum backwards compatibility with present technologies if we are to use it for serious work, rather than just Facebook and YouTube.

Please don't make me repeat myself! Read my posts and think about it before saying once again that Edge is the new, IE is the old. New is not necessarily better!

MS is not going to continue to support outdated software, previous versions of IE. And security issues is a good reason. MS can continue to improve the security of IE11 and that's what they need to do. Face it, old versions of IE are dead and the support is going away.

IE11 will be around for some time to come.

  11. IE 11 will be the last in the IE line-up there and still in use on 10 until 2020 at least when Edge and no longer IE is supported not only by MS but most sites adopting Edge standards. As for Java that invites more problems with then without and why it is phasing out since newer technologies can easily replace the old 3rd party addons! Java and Flash go to the wayside!

That's all I ask. Keep IE 11. I don't mind if support stops eventually, but keep it so we can use it until we can fully switch to Edge.

Hmmm - I moved to Vista in February 2014 knowing that extended phase support was to last until April 2017. This is the only thread (much less forum) that has EVER EVER said that support was to expire on January 2016 (we are talking Vista right? Not some IE revision? Just checking) *Smile No matter - that's OK.

Right - so what am I wrong about? Once Microsoft deprecates support for earlier versions, Windows 7 will only be supported for IE 11. IE 8 and 9 will be dropped. So what am I missing? I wrote in that thread as below:

If you run Vista or Server 2008 Classic, you MUST upgrade to IE 9
If you run Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2, you must upgrade to IE 11
If you run Windows 8 Classic or Server 2012 Classic, we have a special case. Both systems only support IE 10. In most cases you can upgrade Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and receive IE 11 updates. However, last spring, it was decided that IE 10 on Server 2012 would not be supported for two reasons: (a) Server 2012 cannot be upgraded to 2012 R2, and (b) browsing is not a priority in server environments.
If you run Windows 8.1 or Server 2012 R2, you already have IE 11. Similarly is the case with Windows 10 and Server 2016.

    Anyway, no biggie. *Smile

  14. By the way Night Hawk, IE 10 never ran on Windows 8.1 (just Windows 7 and 8) *Smile

  15. I didn't even stay with the 8 CP long after finding it was dual boot unfriendly with 7 causing both versions to crash when first seeing 8 added into the 7 BCD and later following the PC Refresh on 8 seeing 7 added in there both time resulting in both versions kicking the dust! I passed over 8.1 in the interim to look over 10 at the start of the year by way of the Insider program and didn't see any reason to pass up on the 10240 build.

As for extended support ending in 2016 for Vista that was discussed on the Seven Forums years back long before MS decided to extend support for both Vista and 7 an additional 5yrs. as reported back in 2012 not in 2009-11 when people were asking about how long 7 would be supported and was first looked up showing support would end in 2016 for Vista while still being unchanged extended support for 7 until 2020. MS later revised their own data base apparently to correct the goof they made on that. 2017 however makes a lot more sense being the 10yr. mark for the older version there while 7 gets an 11yr. stretch! Microsoft doubles support lifespan for consumer Windows 7, Vista | Computerworld

I posted that news back in 2012 which did come as a rather pleasant surprise since 7 not Vista was also seeing the additional 5yrs. of extended support while previously the word had been 2016. And as far as IE 10 is concerned that was a general not specific statement simply mentioning the need for the latest version of IE for the version of Windows you are running. IE 11 is still going to be the last IE release however since MS is now pushing Edge onto everybody.
