You might try changing the winner in the registry. It's been a long time sine I dug that deep, but essentialy the CBS decisions are driven from there.

    Make an image first!

Download what you need (drivers, stand alone uninstaller, instructions, etc) or use a 2nd machine to get that stuff (alweays nice to have 2 machines, Justin Case)
Disable all network adapters so WU doesn't have an opportunity to help you.

    Completely uninstall the drive
    install the preferred driver
    restart to cement

now here's where you'll have to play - you might research this first.

You'll need to drill down to where your device is listed in the CBS section of the registry (I forget the exact keys, but winners is part of the name)

Hopefully the old device drivers are no longer winners - you should check that though, they might hang around in case a user re-installs the driver.

CBS is a bit cryptic in naming, but you should be able to match the name to the device (at least it's not and AMD device - everything is amd64!)

The install .inf might help out here too - I told you it's been a long time *Wink

Once you think you have the driver keys identified, you'll have to change the permissions on the keys so you can make them winners.

That's about all I can recall - wish I was able to give detailed instructs, but c'est la vie .. 10-15 year old memories tend to fade away.

I'm sure there's someone out there that has a better description of the process. Hopefully I gave you a place to start your re-search.

The folks over at SysNative probably know this stuff, ask usasma, NoelDP, or Tom (can't recall his handle).

    Bill

I'll look into this when I get W10 reinstalled Bill, my dual boot completely screwed up so I had to format my Samsung SSD with the W10 install on. I'll probably get round to it tomorrow hopefully.

    Hi Slartybart,

Thank you and great job !

I have a particular interest in one of the commands you're describing :
    rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\van.dll, RunVAN

This command works well on Window 8/8.1 but I've not been able to have it work on windows 10. Do you have any idea ?

    Thx *Smile

Microsoft to replace Control Panel with Windows 10 Settings app

    Welcome to TenForums, Tonio.

SlartyBart is away for awhile due to illness. We here are all wishing him a speedy recovery.

It would probably be better if you post your request for assistance in a new thread, since this one may go unanswered.

I haven't come to grips with the layout of settings. I'm still stumbling around trying to find things. Eventually it will be as easy as using the Control Panel was, but I'm not there yet.

PC Settings $ucks...I can understand it if you're using touch but other than that...yuck..

BTW, the old control panel hack still works if you like to see everything broken out into categories
    and explanations for fast access...

Make desktop shortcut and name it Master Control Panel...
Then put this in the target box...

    "C:\Master Control Panel.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}"

One thing (not the only) I do not like about settings is every change you make is live, applied immediately. I would much prefer all Setting sto require a Save or Submit button to make them active.

  10. Agreed.

I hate those type of dialogue windows (without OK, Apply and Cancel).
Ubuntu 10 had them (GNOME 2) and LM17.2 MATE has a few of them too.

  11. This is a very bad idea and there is no reason to eliminate the classic Control Panel. Other companies also remove or change features that have been working well for years if not decades. If Microsoft does go down this path I'm leaving the Insider Track.

I've found a mixture . . . one is for my dual monitors. When I change the default monitor (for instance), until I "Apply", nothing happens. The first time this happened, I was thrown for a loop because most of the changes are live, as you say, Trucker.

I've seen others that require me to "Save" but can't remember which ones offhand.

There needs to be a uniform process; either Save, Apply, etc. or live. I'd even go for the old, "Are you sure you want to do that?". *Smile

There should be the option to cancel any changes before the are applied. We should make a suggestion on the Windows feedback.

I don't know, but if you're game, you could try using a Standard Account, and jacking UAC all the way up, and maybe you get your options(of course you'll have to give your admin password for every single change then, like sudo in debian Linux distros).
