Windows 10: Microsoft updates Intel microcode patch for Windows 10

Microsoft has today re-released the Intel microcode updates for all versions of Windows 10 including the latest April 2018 Update (also known as Redstone 4 or version 1803). The refreshed Intel microcode update apparently adds support for more processors and fixes some bug fixes.

As noted above, Windows 10 April 2018 Update is also getting the refreshed Intel patch. If your PC is on Windows 10 April 2018 Update, you may get KB4100347. But it’s worth noting that the update won’t show on devices that are already patched against the vulnerabilities.

Microsoft’s support page was last updated on September 14. According to recent changes section, Microsoft has added support for additional processors that are listed below:

• Broadwell Server E, EP, EP4S
• Broadwell Server EX
• Skylake Server SP (H0, M0, U0)
• Skylake D (Bakerville)
• Skylake X (Basin Falls)

Not just Windows 10 April 2018 Update, but the older versions of the OS are also receiving new Intel microcode updates. Windows 10 Fall Creators Update will get KB4090007 and KB4091663 is rolling out to Windows 10 Creators Update devices.

If you still use Windows 10 Anniversary Update, you will receive KB4091663 and finally, the original version of Windows 10 will get KB4091664.

Keep in mind that these updates were rolled out to several devices earlier this year and it may not show up on your device today.

The latest Intel Microcode patch is also rolling out via Windows Update and you can get this update from Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates. Your PC has all the necessary updates installed if the Windows Update says the system is up to date.

Intel microcode update for Windows 10 1803

It's been a few days since Windows 10 1803 launched, but there is still no sign of an Intel microcode patch to mitigate against branch target injection vulnerabilities (Spectre): https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4093836/summary-of-intel-microcode-updates

My motherboard manufacturer has not made any BIOS microcode updates for my model so I'm reliant on the Microsoft patch.

Why wasn't this important patch made available for 1803 at launch, and when might this patch become available so that we can secure our systems like they were in 1709?

Intel issued the microcode weeks ago, we are just waiting for Microsoft to make a new Windows microcode patch for 1803. The Intel microcode is specific to each CPU, it has nothing to do with the various Windows versions.

I have checked for Windows updates in Windows Update in 1803, there are none yet apart from Windows Defender definition updates. In any case the previous microcode update was not issued via Windows Update, it had to be manually downloaded via the Catalog.
However there is no Intel microcode patch in the Catalog for 1803 as there is for 1709 and before. The Powershell module shows my CPU as vulnerable.

There is also no firmware driver for my motherboard or many other motherboards, which is why Microsoft decided to start issuing microcode updates for Windows 10 prior to 1803.
