Microsoft will automatically install Windows 10 October 2018 Update on your PC

Microsoft is now offering the Windows 10 October 2018 Update automatically to the compatible devices. In an updated support document, the company says that the phased rollout of Windows 10 October 2018 Update has begun and more users should start getting it.

If your PC is compatible and ready, you’ll be prompted to install the Windows 10 version 1809 soon. Similar to the April 2018 Update, this is a staggered rollout and the new or compatible machines will be getting the feature update first.

“We are now starting our phased rollout to users via Windows Update, initially offering the update to devices we believe will have the best update experience based on our next generation machine learning model,” Microsoft explains in its support document updated earlier today.

Last year’s April 2018 Update phased rollout was relatively successful and at this point, the software maker is not aware of any critical issues in Windows 10 version 1809.

Unless you delay the update manually from the settings, your device will start downloading the files automatically. If you’re not ready or your favourite app is not compatible, it’s the right time to delay the update until you’re confident.

To delay the update in Windows 10 Professional, open Settings app and navigate to Update & Security > Windows Update and click Advanced options.

In the page, you’ll find a section ‘Pause updates’ which will pause quality and feature updates for up to 35 days. You can head to the ‘Choose when updates are installed’ section if you would like to delay the update for up to 365 days. To continue receiving the monthly security updates, remember to keep the quality update value at zero.

Microsoft to push automatic Windows 10 upgrades in 2016

"Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be automatically rolled out next year to all users of its older operating systems who have selected to receive updates.

Until now, users of Windows 7 and 8 have needed to register to upgrade to Windows 10. But that's about to change: soon the OS will be listed as an 'Optional Update' and -- from 2016 -- a 'recommended' update that will automatically install itself, if users have opted to receive updates in that way.*Shadedshun :shadedshu:

You can opt out of automatic updates to avoid this, but Microsoftsays that "we strongly discourage this in today’s connected world because of the constant risk of internet threats". You can also change your Windows Update settings to install critical updates but not recommended ones. Although it's still going to be possible to avoid installation, Microsoft seems quite determined for everyone to be using Windows 10 in near future.

The roll-out of reserved updates was initially staggered but, according to Microsoft, now Windows "will automatically kick off the upgrade process once you have made a reservation".

As an intermediate stage, Microsoft says that it will "soon" publish Windows 10 as an optional update, not installed by default, but accessible to all users.

Installing Windows 10 on New PC?

I'm going to be building a new PC on Christmas and want to install Windows 10 on it. I have Windows 10 on my current PC, which I installed upgrading from 8.1 with the files on a USB. How do I go about installing a clean copy of Windows 10 on this new PC? I think I recall something about installing it once makes Microsoft recognize your hardware, but since this will be a PC I'm not sure what steps I need to take. Do I need to go 8.1 -> 10 or is there a method of going directly to 10?
