Microsoft will begin pushing Windows 10’s new Edge to more users

The era of the traditional Microsoft Edge will come to an end for consumers and businesses in the coming months. In January, Microsoft announced that Chromium Edge will replace the classic Edge, which uses Microsoft’s own EdgeHTML to render pages, and Microsoft recently started rolling out the new browser to Windows 10 PCs.

Microsoft has confirmed that the new Edge browser is now being made more broadly available through Windows Update on Windows 10 as part of the company’s planned replacement strategy for Edge outlined earlier this year.

In addition to consumers, Microsoft says it will begin pushing the Chromium Edge to education and business devices on July 30.

Consumer, education and businesses that are running Windows 10 will be automatically updated to the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge. If your PC is joined to an Active Directory, Azure Active Directory domain, or managed by Windows Update for Business (WUfB) and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)—then it will be excluded from the upgrade.

It also appears that Microsoft has started pushing the browser to more consumers via Windows Update and the rollout is expected to expand in the near future. Microsoft previously confirmed that new Edge is being made available to all supported versions of Windows 10, including version 1803.

It’s worth noting that the browser is available widely for older versions of Windows 10 such as version 1803 and 1809. The update may not show up in Windows 10 version 1903, 1909 or 2004 for everyone due to the staged rollout approach.

For businesses, Microsoft has also developed a Blocker Toolkit to prevent automatic delivery of the new Edge. Consumers, however, won’t have a choice, according to Microsoft’s official documentation.

If you don’t see the Edge update in Windows Update, you can always download and install it manually.

At first glance, the new Edge may just look like Chrome, but there are several under-the-hood changes that make Edge a browser that could rival Google’s Chrome.

For example, Microsoft has made an effort to keep the new Edge’s memory and battery consumption down. The company has also enabled support for high-quality Netflix videos. Chrome, on the other hand, is lagging behind as Google is still working on support for improved video playback, performance, and accessibility tools for Chrome.

Microsoft is developing a built-in ad blocker for its Edge browser

"One of the first browser add-ons many people install to improve their online experience is Adblock Plus or something similar. Until recently, Microsoft Edge's lack of support for add-ons put off a lot of would-be users, but reports from Build 2016 suggest that native ad blocking is on its way to the Internet Explorer successor.

Adblock Plus is coming to Edge, but built-in ad blocking would negate the need for such an add-on. A slide shown off and snapped at a Build presentation shows that the next version of Edge, in response to user feedback, will feature ad blocking capabilities. There's no word on delivery timescale, but the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update would seem a likely candidate.

ZDNet's Ed Bott photographed the slide which shows Microsoft's development roadmap built around feedback from testers. Right at the top of the list is reference to plans to create a plugin and extension store for Edge, but it's entry number four that's more intriguing.

"Build ad blocking features into the browser" is listed as a Feature Request from users. But the good news is that it is not only listed as being "Deliverable 4682811", but as "Targeted for the next version".

This will no doubt come as good news for those who have fallen in love with Edge, but it's not something that will be welcomed by the likes of Adblock Plus. It does seem that, particularly in the mobile arena, there is a move to baking ad blocking into the browser so it makes sense that Microsoft is following the trend. But it is the fact that Edge straddles Windows 10 on the desktop and Windows 10 Mobile that makes this a particularly interesting move.

Keep an eye out for Insider builds in the coming weeks as the feature may be just around the corner.

Forget extensions, built-in ad blocking is coming to Microsoft Edge - [UPDATE... no it's not!]
