Vlc will play some encrypted media. I don't use it, the question of it being legal in the U.S. As I said in another post, I recall a court case in U.S. that the judge allowed a person to download the file to play dvds on other operating systems on because it fits the definition of fair use and he already bought the dvd. The copyright office still claims you can't download that file to play the dvd.

I don't know how Windows VLC decryptions works. VLC for Windows can play encrypted dvds on most windows operating systems provided you have a dvd player.

Well, VLC is fine for movies and such but again it is not a true library software and is a pain in the a$$ to try and use in a LiveTV environment. I decided to actually install Windows 10 on one of my laptops and try this. It would not install on my Virtual disc version. No Media Center has been a major drawback for our family.

Windows 10, still doesn't surpass Windows 8 in my eyes.

. . .sorry don't understand, are you saying that VLC may be illegal in the U.S. Haven't heard that before. . .*Huh

  5. Anybody tried it on the current consumer version or are you all running it on the Insider builds? I see the version 10.0.10134.0 in the screen shots but have no idea what that actually means? I'm guessing the MC version not the Windows 10 build number?

  6. I'm wondering how long that will last before Microsoft kills it? Being as it came from the MDL site. *Wink

I think it was part of the Insider build 10134 and then was removed in the next build.

Gee, I use good old WMP for all of those things. Yes both VLC and WMP have equalizers, but WMP also has the SRS effects to boost bass and such. I've just never liked VLC. Anything I can't play in WMP, I go to MPC-HC where everything works.

I had WMC on one XP machine and I never used it so never bothered with it after that. I haven't even tried Groove.

If they remove that ability-wouldn't that also effect vlc playback and other dvd players of encrypted dvds unless the player itself provides a way to play encrypted dvs?

They should still play since the codecs will still be in place.

  12. As far as I know Media Center was never ever included in Windows 10. If it's installed in Windows 8.1 it's removed during the upgrade to Windows 10. This is a hack to add it back to Windows 10. I'm just wondering if anybody tried this trick in 10240 Consumer Release or if it's just meant for Insider builds. I haven't gone to the MDL site yet. Maybe I'll go have a look see. A lot of the posts there just say you have to be a member to view this and I'm not all that interested in signing up to a site like that. I'm actually surprised its still out there.

They could just block Media Center so it won't run. It's their proprietary software to begin with so they could block it or remove it with a patch etc. IMHO

  15. - gotta say, Groove runs really well - and it syncs flawlessly with OneDrive, Xbox One, and Win10 Mobile..
    - it's a good piece of kit.. *Thumbs

    - I still use WMP most of the time, though
    - it's been around a long time, and I really dig the enhancements..
    - particularly like the presets on the graphic equaliser

    - WMP wired up to surround-sound speakers at massive volume (!!)
    - lovin' it..!! *Cool
