Microsoft’s Windows 10 May 2020 Update is now rolling out

After over a year of testing in the channels of the Windows Insider program, Microsoft is rolling out the Windows 10 May 2020 Update to the mainstream consumers.

While the update will be listed as available for your PC in the Windows Update page, Microsoft is promising that it won’t install it automatically. You can choose to download, install and reboot your computer whenever it’s more convenient for you.

Windows 10 May 2020 Update, also known as version 2004 and 20H1, is available for all non-Insiders, but you’ll need to be a “seeker” if you want it today.

Microsoft is rolling out the feature update to anyone who hits the ‘Check for updates’ and ‘Download and install’ option in Windows Update page. That way, if you don’t check for updates, your PC will tell you that a new feature update is available.

You’ll be explicitly asked if you want to download and install the feature update. If you don’t want the update, ignore the update recommendation in the Windows Update. You can still get cumulative updates for November 2019/May 2019 Update without worrying about getting a feature update.

Currently, the update is only available for users that manually check for updates in Windows 10. It’s also possible that you might not see the ‘Download and install’ option in Windows Update due to compatibility issues or Microsoft’s progressive rollout approach.

Remember that if you don’t see Windows 10 version 2004 when you check for updates, you should be able to get it directly by using Media Creation Tool or the Update Assistant.

As we noted above, Microsoft has been testing the feature update with Insiders since February 2019. With May 2020 Update, Microsoft is being much more careful and the company has also opted for phased rollout approach, which gives users more control over their PC.

The Windows 10 May 2020 Update has a bunch of new features including Windows Subsystem for Linux 2, new Cortana app, faster performance, Windows Search improvements, and more. You can read more about the new features included in this release here.

Microsoft Rolls Out the Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Microsoft late Tuesday rolled out the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, marking 1 year in the market for the operating system, and with it, ending the Windows 10 Free Upgrade offer. The new update bears the internal version 1607, with build 14393. The update is several gigabytes in size, and effectively replaces your existing Windows 10 installation.

The update adds new features to Windows Ink, the stylus-based live notes app; Cortana, the voice assistant, which can now be accessed right from the lock-screen, and is integrated with even more apps; and Windows Hello, the in-built biometric ID system, which has been integrated with many more third-party services, such as Dropbox; improvements to Windows Defender, the anti-malware tool; and various under-the-hood improvements that increase performance and energy-efficiency (lower battery usage).

Microsoft’s Windows 10 May 2020 Update is now rolling out

Microsoft to push automatic Windows 10 upgrades in 2016

"Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be automatically rolled out next year to all users of its older operating systems who have selected to receive updates.

Until now, users of Windows 7 and 8 have needed to register to upgrade to Windows 10. But that's about to change: soon the OS will be listed as an 'Optional Update' and -- from 2016 -- a 'recommended' update that will automatically install itself, if users have opted to receive updates in that way.*Shadedshun :shadedshu:

You can opt out of automatic updates to avoid this, but Microsoftsays that "we strongly discourage this in today’s connected world because of the constant risk of internet threats". You can also change your Windows Update settings to install critical updates but not recommended ones. Although it's still going to be possible to avoid installation, Microsoft seems quite determined for everyone to be using Windows 10 in near future.

The roll-out of reserved updates was initially staggered but, according to Microsoft, now Windows "will automatically kick off the upgrade process once you have made a reservation".

As an intermediate stage, Microsoft says that it will "soon" publish Windows 10 as an optional update, not installed by default, but accessible to all users.
