Windows 10: Minecraft Java Edition on a Windows 10 S laptop

Hi. I have inadvertently bought a laptop which has Windows 10 s. I had not previously heard of this but understand now that it restricts the use of non Microsoft approved downloads. I had Minecraft Java edition on my previous laptop for my son but I can't download it onto my new laptop as it is not available in the Microsoft store. There is a Windows 10 version but it is asking me to pay for this, even though I already own Minecraft. I thought that Microsoft owned Minecraft now so I cannot understand how it can't be compatible? What are my options?

1. Pay again and get Minecraft for Windows 10 - if I do this can he still use the Dragon Mods that he likes? Or do they only work with Java edition?

2. Revert to standard windows 10 from the s version I have now. I understand this is a one way street and I can't go back. Will I be able to get Minecraft if I do this? Will there be any other consequences of reverting?

Minecraft Java and Windows 10 edition

For a long time i've wanted to play minecraft with my friends,but they own Minecraft Java edition,and i own Minecraft Windows 10 edition. And we can't connect to eachother. Will there be a way to make Java and Windows 10 have the same playable servers?

If you have purchased several copies of Minecraft from Mojang, then I suggest you to refer the
Mojang refunds policy and check their refund policy.



If you want to swap your editions of Minecraft that you have purchased, please
Contact Mojang Support and they will help you with this.



If you have purchased Minecraft from Microsoft Store, then I suggest you to refer
Returning items you bought from Microsoft Store for exchange or refund
and check if you can get a refund.



As you need the Java Edition of Minecraft, you can follow the steps mentioned in
How do I install Minecraft: Java Edition? and install
the Java Edition of Minecraft on your computer.



Before purchasing the Java Edition of Minecraft, I suggest you to refer the system requirements for installing the Java Edition of Minecraft from

I own Minecraft Windows 10, if I buy Minecraft Java Edition, what will happen to my worlds created with Minecraft Windows 10?
