Windows 10: Missing operating system

Not true. You can run 8 and 10 in BIOS/MBR mode. Just need to disable Secure Boot and select CSM.

in my case they were disabled since windows 8 installation because at the time it would be more complicated to dual boot with linux if needed (not the case now). I think i'll try win8 clean install and upgrade with uefi and secure boot enabled and after upgrade to 10, it will be 3rd try and 3rd reformat(but this time I'll backup the partition before)

 

Just my experience. My Dell laptop did this when I restarted it with a WD My Passport portable usb drive attached. Unplugged usb drive and the laptop booted up normally.

 

Pompano in your case it was trying to boot from external device. I tought this too. But confirmed boot settings and manually set boot from ssd.

As I said earlier it seems that something messes with the partition, when i did chkdsk errors were found and repaired, even so it couldn't boot, neither the command, /fixmbr, /fixboot, /rebuildbcd would work.

My notebook has 2 drives (1 ssd and 1 hdd), I'll try to remove the hdd and make the instalation only with the ssd with uefi and secure boot enabled.

 

Ah, got it. Yeah it does seem to have issues with other drives. Just wanted to add my experience. On my desktop machine I did unplug my other hdd and only had my ssd connected and the install went fine. I hope this will work for you.

 

I also wanted to add that I am not using UEFI at the moment. I read in a guide on these forums that it is better to install and turn on UEFI after windows 10 is up and running.

 

I am only using 1 SSD in my laptop with 4 partitons. Using BIOS. And all what I tried ended up with missing operating system. The strange thing is that a clean install function very well. So at this moment using a not activated version.
Looking forward to a solution or back to Windows-7, what would be pity.

 

Understand ... and sympathize, since I'm in much the same situation.

What I'm hoping will happen, is MS will eventually allow us to do a first-time clean install of Win10 and activate it using an existing Win7/8/8.1 key.

I've had two of three Win7 machines fail miserably on doing the Win10 "upgrade", so I've rolled them both back and will wait to see if MS offers this clean-install option. If they do, I'll try again.

But to date, even though we've been asking about this activation option in these forums since nearly the first days of the Insider program, MS has NOT come back with any clear response -- other than telling folks they need to do the Upgrade -- which is a waste of time when it does not work.

Oh, and as to the third Win7 machine, I'm not going to risk trashing it (like the other two) by Upgrading it to Win10.

Restoring my ssd image of non-activated windows 10 clean instalation.

Here what I did on 3rd tentative:

Needed 3 flash drives, win8, win10 and easus recovery disk in case I needed to restore the partition

1. Backup my functional but non-activated windows 10 partition
2. Disable SATA Porta of hdd in BIOS, leaving just the SSD
3. Did Win8 clean install in formatted partition of SSD
4. Activated Windows 8
5. Run update from win10 flash drive
6. Installation goes fine until last reboot: "Missing operating system"

And so I tried any csm configuration of uefi/legacy. Same error.

So I go to recovery console, tried to access the partition, windows says that it has errors. Run chkdsk, errors repaired, access partition, /fixmbr /fixboot, /scanos and rebuildbcd all commands says that were executed sucessfully, restart machine: "missing operating system" if I open recovery console again the loop occurs

7. Boot Easus and recover win10 fresh install partition (doing this moment, while typing this on desktop)

 

How can i "I've rolled them both back and will wait to see if MS offers this clean-install option. If they do, I'll try again" do this?

 

Is there anyone who had this problem and found a solution or knows what is going wrong?? This is a real pain and probably a big bug in Windows 10 upgrade. We end up with a lost system or a not activating clean install.

 

Nothing yet, maybe I'll have to make a new clean install of win8 in laptop. :/.

This is lesson to ALWAYS clone my os partition when attempting upgrades. I did that now with the functional non activated win10, but I don't want to stay with a no activated system

I'm willing to try again in the weekend phisically removing the hdd from laptop leaving just the ssd, instead of disabling the sata port of hdd in bios. But I doubt if it will make any difference

 

Apparently I was lucky or whatever, but I did get it working. Look at my previous posts to see what worked for me. YMMV...

I have one and planning to upgrade it to Windows 10.
However I contacted Clevo support and they say there is no Windows 10 drivers for W350ET.

Are you on Windows 10, if so how do the drivers run? Are function keys and fingerprint sensors working?

The fingerprint sensor i never used/installed. Everything else seems fine with previous windo8 drivers.

I did it! It was not smooth, but I did it!

I tried again and got the same error, this time instead of just format partition I excluded and tried to create new one. Windows gave error, saiyng that could not create a GPT partition because it had a MBR. Só I disabled uefi and everthing, installed and got the same error.

So this what i did after:

1. Physically removed hdd leaving just ssd.
2. Cloned/Backed up my second "game partition" of ssd
3. Installed Win8 clean install telling it to EXCLUDE ALL partitions of ssd (UEFI enabled so win8 use GPT).
4. Win 8 recreated paritions using GPT.
5. Activated win 8
6. Updated from media tool and IT WORKED!
7. Repartition SSD and restore my games partition (doing this now)
8. Reinsert HDD in Notebook
