Windows 10: Mistakenly installed Win 10 Home instead of Pro.

I mistakenly installed Win 10 Home instead of Pro and now my windows won't activate. The activation troubleshoot directs me to the MS Store but there I don't have the option to install Pro and I don't have a key since it's a digital license attached to my account.

inadvertant installation of Win 10 Pro instead of Home

While trying to reinstall Win 10 Home on this computer, I mistakenly chose Win 10 Pro. Now I am unable to go back and reinstall Home. Pro seems to be locked in and since this computer wasn't set up as a Pro box, I am not able to activate. I've changed
the registry values in two places to reflect it is Windows 10 Home, but it defaults to 10 Pro. I've gotten new Media Creation Tool, made an ISO and still cannot get it to install as win 10 Home. Help

Try this option to see if you can upgrade to the Pro version:

Open the Settings App (Gear icon on your Starr Menu)

Go to Update and Security - Activation

Click Change Product key

Enter this generic product key: VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

When prompted, click 'Activate Product'

If the above does not work first time, temporarily disconnect totally from the Internet and click 'Activate' again . ..

(Note the generic key will cause the Home edition to upgrade to the Pro edition, then your own legal licence will activate automatically after a restart)

If the above does not work for you, the only way to resolve this would be to re-install Windows 10 again and this time choose to install Windows 10 Pro

By default the installation media reads the current version and installs that version, here are the steps to force the installation media to provide you the option of choosing Windows 10 Pro

When running the Media Creation Tool, untick the option to 'Use Preferred options for this PC'

Right click your Desktop, choose New - Text Document

Paste the text below into that document

[EditionID]

Professional

[Channel]

Retail

Then choose File - Save Aa, at the bottom of the Save As dialog, change file type to 'All Files' then save that file as ei.cfg (note you must manually add the cfg file extension)

Then copy that ei.cfg file into the Sources folder in your USB Installation Media

Then when you begin the Installation, you should be asked which Edition you want to install . . .
