We are excited to announce you can now apply to attend MR Dev Days, May 2-3 at the @microsoft campus in Redmond

With the announcements Microsoft recently made in the mixed reality and cloud space, we’re thrilled to open applications for Mixed Reality Dev Days, a chance to build the skills, network, and ideas you need to take your mixed reality applications to the next level. Mixed Reality Dev Days will offer attendees a chance to code alongside our engineering teams, learn and test the latest in our portfolio, and connect with a community of developers like you who are leading a new era of mixed reality applications.

We’ll also hold sessions led by our teams to dive deeper on what’s new and share tips for getting started.

Azure Kinect DK

New mixed reality services like Azure Spatial Anchors

Azure essentials, from computer vision, to IoT, to migration…and more!

Developer tools from partners and our own portfolio, like Altspace SDK and Mixed Reality Capture Studio tools

Business insights including target markets, industry momentum and our Mixed Reality Partner Program

The science behind the tech, like eye tracking and depth sensors

Attendees will also have a chance to get hands-on with our technology at an evening reception to close out Day 1.

Applications will be open until noon on April 5, 2019. If we do not fill all the spots from this first wave of applicants, we may open it back up for a second wave.

This is an application stating interest in the event. This does not guarantee attendance.

We will be continiously reviewing applications and will let all applicants know acceptance or not starting on April 5th via email.

We do not have hard-and-fast rules about what will get someone into the event. Our aim is to have a wide range of mixed reality developers and designers as our audience, and any info you can provide below will help us to make sure that happens.

This event is free to attend. Attendees will be responsible for travel expenses (airfare and transportation, hotel, meals).

Microsoft announces Mixed Reality Dev Days May 2 to 3

The vision:

With the announcements Microsoft recently made in the mixed reality and cloud space, we want to invite you—an amazing, unprecedented community of mixed reality developers—to come work alongside us, meet Microsoft developers and program managers who brought these devices and services to life, and learn about our developer roadmap.

At Mixed Reality Dev Days, you’ll build the skills, network, and ideas you need to take your mixed reality applications to the next level. Mixed Reality Dev Days will offer a chance to:

Learn and test the latest in our portfolio: HoloLens 2, new Azure mixed reality services, Azure Kinect Developer Kit, and more!

Connect with developers like you who are leading a new era of mixed reality applications.
Dev Days is designed for you—your ideas, your feedback. We would love to get your input, learn more about you, your customers and work, and how we can better work alongside you. As we move into this third wave of computing, one based on open principles, Microsoft is a trusted partner who values your feedback. Dev Days is one of the first of many opportunities to build that relationship with you.

Which one should I attend? Microsoft Build or MR Dev Days?

If you are an Mixed Reality developer looking to get training on our developer platform, tools, services and devices, we would encourage you to join us at the Dev Days. While some elements may be repeated at Build, content there will be mostly catering to our commercial partners, business decision makers and CxO’s.

How to request an invite:

Currently we are asking everyone to sign up for our developer program. When we have the invite process in place, we will send an email to all members of the dev program to request an invite. Once you request an invite, we will send you a form to complete – it’s a chance for you to share a little more about you and your mixed reality work: what cool projects you’ve made, what you’d like to make, where you’re active, and what communities you’re a part of.

Who should request an invite?

Short answer: you! We’re passionate about welcoming a diverse developer community to Mixed Reality Dev Days. We’re also ensuring this event brings together developers from our large customers and partners, large studios, small studios, and individual developers.

Microsoft refreshing Redmond campus

At a time when space is at a premium and many companies are looking for room to grow, we recognize that our 500-acre campus in Redmond, Washington, is a unique asset. Neighboring a vibrant urban core, suburban towns, lakes, mountains and miles of forest, it’s one of Microsoft’s crown jewels. And as we continue to grow and look to create the best workplace in the tech sector, Microsoft will invest right here in Redmond, our home for more than 30 years.

Next fall, we will break ground on a multi-year campus refresh project that will include 18 new buildings, 6.7 million square feet of renovated workspace, $150 million in transportation infrastructure improvements, public spaces, sports fields and green space. Today Microsoft has 125 buildings on our Redmond campus. When this project is complete, our main campus will be comprised of 131 buildings — including the equivalent of 180 football fields of new and renovated space — of modern workspace for the 47,000 employees who work here every day, plus room to expand operations and add up to 8,000 more people.

This project represents a significant investment by the company, will involve roughly 2,500 construction and development jobs, and will take five to seven years to complete. It’s an investment that’s good for our employees, good for the Puget Sound community, and makes good sense for our shareholders. We are not only creating a world-class work environment to help retain and attract the best and brightest global talent, but also building a campus that our neighbors can enjoy, and that we can build in a fiscally smart way with low environmental impact.

As our employees create the tools and services of the future workspace for our customers, it’s important they have a campus that reflects that future for themselves. We will create that workplace in part by applying our learnings from our other recent campus redevelopment projects in Redmond, Vancouver B.C. and the Paddington office in London, and how they have enabled teams to collaborate, showcase our workspace and related technologies for customers and, most importantly, enhance the experience for employees. Our new campus will be more open and less formal, divided into a series of “team neighborhoods” while capturing more natural light and fostering the type of creativity that will lead to ongoing innovation to advance the industry and benefit our customers.

And while we transform our workspace inside, we will renovate the exterior to create more opportunities to exercise, play and connect with nature for the people who work at Microsoft and those who live nearby. Our plans include a 2-acre open plaza that will fit up to 12,000 people, running and walking trails, facilities for soccer and cricket, and retail space.

Our new buildings will focus on inclusive design and accessible technology to empower all of our employees. The campus will be built for pedestrians and bikes with all cars moved to an underground parking facility. We will also build off the region’s smart investments in transportation by constructing a foot- and cyclist-only bridge across WA-520 that will connect both sides of our campus and tie into the future Redmond Technology Transit Station where Link Light Rail will arrive in 2023.

Redmond has been Microsoft’s home since 1986, and we are proud to be an active part of the Puget Sound community. Microsoft is committed to remaining a good neighbor and ensuring that our operations are run in a sustainable way. We prize our relationship with the City of Redmond and will work closely with officials on the approval for campus and building architectural designs, engineering, building permit review and land use code compliance. As a Zero Waste Certified campus we will continue to focus further on waste-reduction initiatives. We’ll also continue to fully fund transit options for employees, including ORCA transit cards, carpool and vanpool, and Microsoft-run employee Connector buses and other vehicles to supplement existing options. And we will continue to be Energy Smart, using Azure for building system monitoring to optimize our energy usage and reduce our carbon footprint.

As Microsoft continues to create the tools and services that are shaping the future of work, we can’t think of a better time to modernize our campus into a model of ingenuity and innovation. Windows Mixed Reality dev kits shipping this month

At Microsoft, we are building Windows 10 to be the most complete platform across the broadest range of mixed reality devices and experiences. We believe that mixed reality can empower new waves of creativity and should be affordable and attainable for everyone.

As we announced last year, we’re partnering with leading device makers including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and 3Glasses on a wide range of headsets that pair with your Windows Mixed Reality-ready PC. These are the first mixed reality headsets to deliver built-in inside-out tracking, meaning there is no need to purchase or install external trackers or sensors in the wall. Moreover, you don’t need to bother with a complicated setup, just plug and play.

Today, at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, we shared the next step in our mixed reality journey. As we continue to build on the momentum of the past year, starting this month we will begin to ship developer edition headsets created in partnership with Acer to our developer partners.

Here is your first look at the Acer Windows Mixed Reality Development Edition headset!

To empower even more developers to create in mixed reality, we gave a “golden ticket” to game developers who attended our Windows Mixed Reality session at GDC, and those developers will receive the Acer developer edition headset in the coming months. Game developers interested in building content for Windows Mixed Reality can sign up for ID@Xbox. All other developers can learn about the Windows Mixed Reality program here.

We’re also excited to share that Windows Mixed Reality experiences will light up on other devices over time, beyond desktop and Microsoft HoloLens. Our plan is to bring mixed reality content to the Xbox One family of devices, including Project Scorpio, in 2018.

When we begin the phased rollout of the developer kits this month, the kits will include the Acer headset, along with documentation and access to Windows 10 Insider preview builds and the software development kit (SDK) to enable developers to build mixed reality applications.

The specifications for the Acer Windows Mixed Reality Development Edition headset include:

Two high-resolution liquid crystal displays at 1440 x 1440

Display refresh rate up to 90 Hz (native)

Built-in audio out and microphone support through 3.5mm jack

Single cable with HDMI 2.0 (display) and USB 3.0 (data) for connectivity

We can’t wait to see what our developer partners build with our expanding platform, which currently delivers more than 20,000 Universal Windows applications, including mixed reality apps and games as well as the ability to stream Xbox games to your Windows 10 PC. Not only will you enjoy spectacular, immersive experiences, but also the things that you do most with your Windows PC – in mixed reality.
