Windows 10: Monitor Will Not Switch Off...

I followed the advice in Option 1, but I don't have the ability to "Console lock display off timeout"

I've still got it set to 1 minute in the setting "Turn off Display after".

I'll try to post a screenshot as that might be easier for you.

 

You'll need to do what's in the note box above step 1 option 1 first in that tutorial to add the "Console lock display off timeout" option. The default time is 1 minute though.

I was just thinking: Is it possible that an app is forcing the monitor to stay on? I'm only running the apps I need open, but I just thought this could be possible...

Test to see if there is any specific time when the monitor does turn off, and what you are doing when it won't turn off.

Okay I just locked the PC and went into another room for 5minutes and the screen was still on when I came back...

 

How to you have the monitor connected to the graphics card? If able, you might test using a different connection.

If the monitor is connected through some hub, try connecting directly to the graphics card.

As a test, how does the context menu below work for you to turn off the monitor?

The monitor is connected directly to the graphics card.

The graphics card is a Nvidia 460 with 1GB of memory with the latest Nvidia drivers.

Is there a way I can do this without needing to install a 3rd party app like NirCMD?

 

NirCMD doesn't install. It's a standalone .exe file that is used by the context menu to run the command with. It's a safe file.

 

I just tried using a different monitor:

I plugged in an Acer monitor and set Windows 10 to only use the Acer monitor and I locked Windows 10 and went to another room for 15minutes but when I came back the Acer monitor was still on... *Sad *Sad

I've still set Windows to turn off the Display after 1 minute of idleness...

 

Did using the context menu work for you? It could be used as a workaround for now.

 

Good news:

I just shut down the VLC Media Player app and now the monitors turn off!

Do you know if it's possible for my monitor to turn off as soon as I press "Windows Key + L"?

 

You might check VLC settings to see if it may have a prevent to turn off display setting that could be causing this.

 

VLC does have an option if you toggle on view 'all' settings instead of 'simple' to stop screen savers kicking in , there used to be one to stop the video blanking separately, but I can't find that any more.. it may have been combined with the stop screensaver option.
