Windows 10: Mostly successful windows user name and folder change - some anomalies

First, I think it's kind of annoying that microsoft makes a 1-1 relationship between a local user name and your microsoft account. I have 2 separate PCs with windows 10 pro, and I don't think I should have to work so hard to have 2 different user names on them tied to one microsoft billing account! I am a software dev admittedly intermediate at best but hey ; and I have tried to fix this by doing some research first.


I followed steps that can be found on these forums to change user name and it has not displayed any issues for about 4 months. When I installed anaconda, and tried to run jupyter, it threw a kernel error. StackOverflow suggested to edit the kernel.json file for that installation. This is where I saw that it had used the old username during the automated generation/install process.


I proceeded to check all the changes I made to username/folder/regedit, etc, and verified all those are correct. I figured maybe an environment variable so I checked there and saw that OneDrive and OneDrive customer still refer to C:\Users\<old username>\OneDrive.


I'm guessing this means that there are other places where the old username still persists. Can we please get a definitive list of all the places to change this data? Also, a definitive guide on official docs on how to do it would be even better. Finally, a streamlined process that doesn't tie usernames directly to other ids, rather through join tables like one would expect from a decent db to manage all of this as well.


Since becoming a dev and working a lot with the dotnet and microsoft ecosystem, I have really come to appreciate Microsoft as a company. There is great documentation, and clearly passionate, clever and hardworking people there. I'm sure there are lots of issues to which to attend, hopefully someone can give this one some attention and effort.

Change User Name Folders

On this link, the details show renaming another account. I'm wanting to change the Admin account. It's a good thing I had another user setup on my computer, also as an Admin, because after changing the SID in step 8. And, unable to change the name in step
11. As "Rename" wasn't in the list. I restarted the computer, since the Admin user account name was changed I was unable to load windows. I had to log into my other account, which was setup as Admin and change the SID back to the 5 letters the user name was
titled.

My computer, Admin account, works again.

I wasn't wanting to just change another account user name, which this is possible to do. I wanted to change the main user, myself.
