Not proof. You can still do that in Task Manager after using the powershell command taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
    (I've just tried it)

Yes you can still run taskmanager, but explorer, is definately closed (black screen)
From task manager in windows, it is obviously not closed as you can still browse folders after ending the explorer task

No, I see no difference. I don't get a black screen. Only the desktop and taskbar go black All open apps are still visible and I can Alt-tab between them.

I just replicated my scenario on 3 different systems plus 2 virtual systems, all black screens.
Also asked a collegue onsite to replicate this on a client system to substantiate my thoughts! Same result...

I cannot replicate, windows explorer being open after the powershell command as per your last post, so I cannot comment further.
However, I will communicate with microsoft support for clarrification and revert back.

I am intersted to know, how your system responds different to the test systems I have running.

It a puzzle to be sure. My system is Windows 10 Home (x64) version 1703, os build 15063.250. I'm logged in with a local account that's an administrator. I can replicate the same behaviour in Windows 10 Pro (x86) v. 1607, os build 1066 on my second system. Both systems are listed in 'My Computers' (bottom left of this post).

Group policies, perhaps? You appear to be operating in a commercial environment.

apologies, I misread you last post.
If the taskbar and windows desktop are black, then explorer is killed, any running apps are not open in explorer and cannot be opened as they are dependant on explorer GUI.

All I am saying here, is that explorer.exe is killed.

    To make this more interesting...
After several explorer kill processes trying to replicate the issue from powershell, I now also get a black screen when I end the eplorer task from the windows task manager, exactly as it should work?

    Dumbfounded....

It seems to depend on what apps you have open and whether they are minimised when you kill explorer. I have several open, maximised or in windows (Task Manager, IE, a command or Powershell prompt, etc.). These are what remain visible and useable.

Yes, Windows explorer will stay open if there are apps open, even if explorere is ended in the task manager. Close all apps or close the apps after you have ended the process in taskmanager, and you should get a black screen with task manager open only.

    You can then restart explorer.

P.S. Bree, I also appreciated your input, but just for my preference, I liked the command line solution. *Cool
