  1. Moved Documents Folder to D: drive but didn't free up space

My C: drive is practically full and one of the things taking up a lot of space is my Sims game so I looked into moving that to the practically empty D: drive. In order to do that I needed to move the full documents folder, which I did by following this tutorial: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/74952-move-location-documents-folder-windows-10-a.html

It says that the documents folder in now in the D drive and if I check it all the files are still there but the problem is it didn't actually free up any space. I still have almost no space in my C drive and the D drive still has the same amount. Did it not actually move it? Is there something else I need to do?

    :)

Not enough space on Recovery (DMoved Documents Folder to D: drive but didn't free up space :) drive.

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

Please help me with the following:

    1. What is the make and model number of your Computer?

Please note that recovery "D" is a partition on the hard drive which contains the image of the Operating system. You can use it to restore the computer back to factory settings. You should not attempt to store files in it.
If you have any data saved on the D drive, I would suggest you to move it to an external drive and to free up some space, you can follow the steps provided in the article:
Free up drive space in Windows 10.

If you are using a HP computer, then you can refer to this article:
HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - What is the Recovery (DMoved Documents Folder to D: drive but didn't free up space :) Hard Drive?

    Hope this helps.

Freeing up space in C drive (to D?)

As suggested above moving your library folders should free up a lot of space

There is only one way to move your library folders (Documents, Pictures . . . etc.) to your D Drive without causing issue with your operating system

    • Create a folder on your D Drive to contain all your libraries, give it a meaningful name
    • Inside that folder, create a folder for each of your librrary folders (Pictures, Documents, Videos . . . etc.
    • Then right click each of your Library folders and choose Properties
    • On the properties dialog, click on the Location Tab, click Move
    • Redirect the library to the new folder your created inside the folder with a meaningful name
    • When asked if you want to merge files\folders, choose Yes

Important Note: make sure you move each library into the correct folder - do not get them mixed up!

e.g. (Replace Meaningful Name in ceach case)

    Pictures - D:\Meaningful Name\Pictures

    Documents - D:\Meaningful Name\Documents

    Videos - D:\Meaningful Name\Videos

    Music - D:\Meaningful Name\Music

Moved Documents Folder to D: drive but didn't free up space

Moving Folder Locations from SSD onto D Drive

So i moved my documents, pictures, videos, and music folders from my ssd to my D drive.

This is the process i followed: right click folder, click properties, click the location tab, click move, select the D drive, click ok.

What I failed to do, was create a NEW folder within the D drive (labelled either documents, pictures, videos, etc) to move the folder too. I misread the instructions, and just assumed I was putting the folder INTO the D drive, and that the folder itself would be moved to the D drive, and that I didn't need to create a folder with the same name as the folder I was moving. I hope that makes sense!

Anyway, now I have 4 separate D drives listed in my PC menu. Pretty sure underneath it all this is messing stuff up. Any help would be appreciated. Pretty concerned at this point that this is a permanent error.
