Moving oem license to new PC

    Hello,

2 or 3 years ago I bought pc parts, built a pc out of them. Back then I got Windows 10 home OEM license from the retailer who told me that for personal OEM license I am entitled to deactivate it from original device and activate it on new one when I decide to build new machine.

The time has come now I am waiting for my mobo to come and started reading up on the process of deactivating the license in order to move it. And depending on the site I read I find mixed opinions whether I can move OEM to another system?

Also I want to now sell my old computer how do I make sure that the system is properly deactivated? I have seen some topics saying that the windows automatically activates on old system after reinstalling. I don't remember for it to be a case for me as I think I had to manually provide the code year ago when I was reinstalling Windows on new ssd but I am not sure anymore.

Once again - it was not preinstalled on the machine but bought separately, as apparently it makes a difference.

    :)

Moving my Windows 10 Pro OEM license to a PC with a Window 10 Home OEM License

I apologize in advance. I have read the answers on moving an OEM license and I am still not sure.

Long ago I bought a PC with an OEM license for Windows 7. I have purchased all of the upgrades to Windows up until 10 (which was free). Now I have one PC with a license for Windows 10 Pro.

I have now purchased a NEW PC with an OEM license for Windows 10 Home.

I would like to MOVE the license for Pro to the new PC. I plan to wipe out the hard disk on the old PC and install a version of Linux. There won't be any duplicated licenses at the end of this process if it is supported.

Can I do this? Will the activation code actually allow the upgrade to Pro. Thank you so much.

Information about failed Motherboards with an OEM License:

You can not replace the Motherboard with an OEM preinstalled License with whatever Motherboard you wish to when you have a preinstalled OEM License (HP, Acer, etc)

    .

You have to follow the directives or you void your OEM License.

This was the original link. Microsoft is altering/deleting links, but the information that was originally there remains the same (I copied it before the link disappeared)

    Device Partner Center

    Q. If my customer asks me to upgrade a PC with new hardware components, when is a new operating system needed? When would the PC be considered "new"?

    A. Generally, an end user can upgrade or replace all of the hardware components on a computer—except the motherboard—and still retain the licence for the original Microsoft OEM operating system software. If the
motherboard is upgraded or replaced for reasons other than a defect, then a new computer has been created. Microsoft OEM operating system software cannot be transferred to the new computer, and the licence of new operating system software is required.

If the motherboard is replaced because it is defective, you do not need to acquire a new operating system license for the PC
as long as the replacement motherboard is the same make/model or the same manufacturer's replacement/equivalent, as defined by the manufacturer's warranty.

    Information about transferring licenses:

If the Laptop/Computer came with the Windows Operating System preinstalled (Dell, HP, Acer, etc) , that Product Key that came with the Laptop/Computer is for the preinstalled OEM License and is non-transferable.

The OEM License/Product Key (preinstalled Operating Systems on Dell, HP, etc machines) is tied to the first machine it is installed on and dies when that machine dies.

The above rule also applies to OEM System Builders Licenses.

Retail Operating System License, that you buy and install yourself, are allowed to be transferred to another machine.

But Retail Licenses can also only be installed on one machine at any particular time.

Moving oem license to new PC

How to move Win 7 license over to a new rig?

AFAIK, OEM licenses will have a Product ID that usually contain "OEM" within it - it can be found under Control Panel > System > Windows Activation (usually).
