Windows 10: Mozilla Facebook Container extension for Firefox

Even with the ongoing #deletefacebook movement, not everyone is willing to completely walk away from the connections theyâve made on the social platform. After all, Facebook â and its subsidiary Instagram â is where the mountain biking club organizes rides, people post pet pics, dance moves catch on and lifeâs moments get shared with friends and family, near and far. Since the Cambridge Analytica scandal broke, Facebook has been greeted with more skepticism as itâs been under a hot spotlight on how it gathers, uses and gives access to our personal data for targeted advertising and manipulation, both on and off Facebook platforms. With recent news about their policy not to block false political ads, this targeting gets ever malicious.

The bad news is that we canât be sure how much Facebook continues to engage in dodgy data practices. But the good news is that the Facebook Container extension for Firefox can help you put a âfenceâ between your Facebook profile and what you do on the rest of the web, thereby limiting Facebookâs reach.

How it works

If youâve ever created a Facebook account (and even if you havenât) Facebook can track almost all your web activity and tie it to your Facebook identity. Many sites embed Facebook widgets on their sites, meaning, any site where you spot a âLikeâ button, see Facebook comments enabled or have the option to sign in with your Facebook account, youâre being tracked by Facebook. These embedded widgets might make logging in or commenting easier, however that convenience opens you up to being tracked by Facebook across the web.

Even if you donât use them, Facebook uses its like, share and comment buttons to track you.

For those who would like to opt out of Facebook tracking, the Facebook Container extension for the Firefox browser will block those embedded widgets on non-Facebook pages. And in doing so, Firefox helps you protect your browsing history and data from Facebook.

When youâre browsing with the Facebook Container extension, you can still go to any site and view content, but Facebook enabled comments, shares, likes and logins will be blocked. A blocked widget will look like this with a pink, circular callout to alert you:

What about Facebook Messenger and Instagram?

To help you control the amount of data Facebook can gather about you, the Facebook Container extension also includes protection from Instagram and Facebook Messenger trackers. This way, no matter where you are on the internet, trackers and cookies embedded from those sites are also blocked. But it also means that Instagram media embedded on websites will be blocked, so you might see this:

Mozilla browser Container Extension

How many of you have used the new Mozilla "face book" extension for its Firefox browser that isolates the Facebook identity of users from rest of your web activity ??
Facebook Container Extension, once installed in the user’s Firefox browser, makes it harder for Facebook to use cookies to track what they do on other sites. Upon installing the extension, Facebook Container will delete any existing Facebook cookies and then long the user out of their account. That user then logs back in, at which time the tab will show up with a blue color to indicate its container status.
Within that tab, the user is able to use Facebook like usual, including clicking links to other sites. Any link that takes the user to a non-Facebook destination will open in a different tab outside of the container. “This makes it harder for Facebook to track your activity on other websites via third-party cookies,” Mozilla explains.
There is some minor inconvenience associated with the tab, namely that external like and share buttons on other sites may not work. That is intended to prevent the social network from associating activity data with the Facebook user.

This extension helps you control more of your web activity from Facebook by isolating your identity into a separate container. This makes it harder for Facebook to track your activity on other websites via third-party cookies.

Rather than stop using a service you find valuable and miss out on those adorable photos of your nephew, we think you should have tools to limit what data others can collect about you. That includes us: Mozilla does not collect data from your use of the Facebook Container extension. We only know the number of times the extension is installed or removed.

When you install this extension it will delete your Facebook cookies and log you out of Facebook. The next time you visit Facebook it will open in a new blue-colored browser tab (aka “container tab”). In that tab you can login to Facebook and use it like you normally would. If you click on a non-Facebook link or navigate to a non-Facebook website in the URL bar, these pages will load outside of the container.

Should you click on any Facebook Share buttons on other browser tabs it will load them within the Facebook container. You should know that when you’re using these buttons information will be sent to Facebook about the website that you shared from.

If you use your Facebook credentials to create an account or log in using your Facebook credentials, it may not work properly and you may not be able to login. Also, because you’re logged into Facebook in the container tab, embedded Facebook comments and Like buttons in tabs outside the Facebook container tab will not work. This prevents Facebook from associating information about your activity on websites outside of Facebook to your Facebook identity. So it may look different than what you are used to seeing.

There’s a lot of value in your social data. It’s important to regularly review your privacy settings on all sites and applications that use it. The EFF has useful advice on how to keep your data where you want it to be, under more of your control.
