Windows 10: MSI files refuse to install.

Lately, I have been having trouble with the .msi format files. Things like the Minecraft installer and the Epic Games Launcher installer have been difficult/impossible.

Whenever I double click on a .msi file to install something, it may bring up the wizard, but as soon as it starts, and I mean the second it starts, it gives me this message: "An error occurred while writing installation information to disk. Click to make sure enough disk space is available, and click Retry, or Cancel to end the install."


Then, it gives me this error in the wizard window: "*fill in the blank* Launcher Setup Wizard has ended prematurely because of an error. Your system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, run Setup Wizard again. Click the Finish button to exit the wizard.


I had to download the epic games launcher on my laptop and then move the files over to this computer which took about an hour because of file size. The Minecraft launcher, on the other hand, isn't able to do that for some reason.


I am an administrator and have tinkered with the permissions and made sure that I have full access to the files that it's wanting to download in, and I have about 300 GB of space free on my disk. I don't see it being either of those problems.


If anyone could help me figure out how to fix this, I'll be grateful.

Cannot install MSI files in Windows 10

Easiest way is to start the msi file via Windows command line and open the command line 'run as administrator'!

• Click Start.
• 
  In the Start Search box, type cmd, and then press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER
  
• 
  Switch in the cmd to the MSI path and install the msi via cmd
  

 

Windows Installer Error: This installation package cannot be opened.

The above error can occur if the locally cached Windows Installer package (*.msi) file is damaged or corrupted.

To rectify the above, I suggest that you try the steps mentioned below and check if you are able to install the software successfully.

• Open the \Windows\Installer folder on your computer's hard disk.
• Right-click any file with an .msi extension.
• Click Properties on the shortcut menu. The
  Subject box on the Summary tab contains the name of the product that installed the .msi file.
• Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each .msi file in the \Installer folder, and delete the .msi file for the software that you are trying to install.
