    msiexec access denied

    Hello,

Having got my new OC (10 Enterprise). I've done all the updating it required so it's fully up to date. I started to install all my programs. A few days later the install programs stopped working, both msi and exe. From what I can tell it's "msiexec.exe" which has some how become unstartable. I can't unregister it or register it. I can't start the service manually.

Searching the forum, seem to tell me it's a common problem. I've seen the msifile.reg and looked at that and all the registers are all ready there on my system. So I ran the reg file anyway, but one or more of them failed, it complained about some entries could not be written and with trial and error I traced it to "[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Msi.Package\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\ShimLayer Property Page] @="{513D916F-2A8E-4F51-AEAB-0CBC76FB1AF8}". I can not make any alteration to this register.

I've run sfc /scannow, no problems.

The various error messages I get are...

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." When I run an msi.

"Failed to run msiexec.exe." When I run either classicshell.exe or openshell.exe.

But I can run the install exes of Audacity, cdbxp and the gimp.

On trying to start the installer service I get "Windows could not start the Windows installer service on Local Computer. Error 5: Access is denied."

The Install and Uninstall troubleshooter, found no problems.

    Antivirus was disabled.

My account has admin rights and things were run as admin where I could.

So what the heck is stopping msiexec from running?

    Thank You.

    :)

    msiexec access denied

net user administrator /active:no keeps saying access denied.

    Hi Rebekah,

It's possible that you're not using an elevated command prompt, causing the Access Denied error. We suggest following these steps to properly disable the built-in administrator account:

    • Right-click the Start button.
    • Choose Command Prompt (Admin).
    • Copy and paste net user Administrator /active:no and press
      Enter
. If the command isn't successful, please post a screenshot so that we can study it further.

Let us know if you're able to hide the administrator account after following these steps.
