Windows 10: Multi boot system question....adding Vista

For UEFI you need to install Vista (x64) with SP1 (or 2) already included in your image.

 

I used Vista SP 2 ISO multi edition in my tests. Applying image with DISM on a BIOS based machine with MBR formatting, it works like a piece of cake. Could not get it working on UEFI based machine, not even when installing on an additional MBR initialized disk.

 

It can work, secure boot must be turned off

 

I didn't get it working on UEFI / GPT system even with Secure Boot turned off.

 

Well darn, I figured that is what the problem was

 

I thought that, too, tried then on both Hyper-V 2nd gen VM and a laptop with UEFI / GPT, disabling secure boot. Nothing. VMs showing just black screen, laptop going directly to recovery mode when Vista was selected from boot menu.

On BIOS / MBR machines as well as 1st gen VMs, no issues. Works like a charm.

I will continue testing it simply because theoretically there shouldn't be anything preventing Vista to boot from GPT disk on UEFI system.

 

I already have secure boot turned off since I have Linux installed and working using Easy BCD as a boot manager.
Yes thanks guys for all the suggestions and testing. Just an idea to have several MS Windows versions bootable on the same machine!
Already have VM with DOS, Windows 3.11, Windows 95. Windows 98 and Windows XP. Maybe the next step is to add Vista!

 

@Kari what is considered a class 3 system?

That is an option, but if it can be done I have confidence Kari will figure it out

 

Class 3 means that UEFI does not support CSM (compatibility support module), therefore there's no backwards compatibility. Vista & W7 cannot run on Class 3 UEFI, missing CSM means the machine can't handle legacy bootloaders required by Vista & W7.

In my case, the test laptop is a bit older and has Class 2, so that shouldn't be an issue.

 

Must be just a crazy fluke that I got Windows 7 installed and running on this same machine.

 

I think it's rather that you have class 2.x UEFI, Seven and Vista do not have (should not have) any issues running from GPT disk on UEFI machines as long as UEFI is not class 3 or later.
