Windows 10: Multiple problems after updates

I run a dual boot Win 8.1 and Win 10, with the latter just for gaming which I haven't had much time for recently, so I haven't booted into it that often. So when I did a month or two ago there were a bunch of updates.

I'm not exactly what updates there were but I think it included 1803. Either way, loads of things went wrong after that. For example it was taking ages to login to Windows, I think it just showed a blank screen for all that time. I did a scan and repair which fixed that problem but I still have others including:

Right-clicking on taskbar icons doesn't work. I have to hold shift+rightclick to bring up the menu.

Clicking on the systray "Actions needed" icon briefly opens the Windows Defender Security Centre window (all blue) before it closes itself.

Under Settings - Accounts - Family & other people, clicking on "Add a family member" or "Add someone else to this PC" briefly opens a grey window titled "Microsoft account" which then closes itself. I note that under "Your family" it says "We can't connect to Microsoft family at the moment" but that might just be because I'm not logged in using an Outlook address.

I guess I may have to just do a fresh install but before I resort to that I thought I'd ask if anyone has any ideas how to fix it, not least because knowing what went wrong might help me avoid it happening again in future.

Windows 10 1709 System Restore problems...


That seems to be an attempt at Option 2 in the tutorial, which requires you to
a. Boot to a command prompt (Did you?)
b. You then seem to be mixing steps 3,4 and 5, thus your command is incorrect.

I suggest Option 1 is easier.

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

Intel E5200 Gets Updated, R0 Stepping Coming Up

Intel's Pentium Dual-Core E5200 processor is getting on course for a specifications update. The chip will feature in a new, improved Wolfdale-2M core, spec'd out as the R0 stepping, from its current M0 stepping. The new stepping is intended to add new instructions, power-management features, and bring about changes in the chip-package. A short list of known changes is as follows:

• CPUID changed from 10677 to 1067A
• Power State Indicator (PSI) support with Intel 4 series chipsets
• New instructions - XSAVE and XRSTOR
• New S-spec and MM numbers
• New halide-free chip package

Due to the changed CPUID, users may require BIOS updates to detect the CPU. According to the company, E5200 R0 should be out by April 13.
